Salia, age 20, gave birth alone during the middle of the night. She had prolonged labor and then experienced excessive bleeding. She lost the baby. Help did not arrive until the morning, when it was too late. As a result, she developed uterine prolapse with urinary incontinence. She became pregnant again and delivered a healthy baby boy. Her prolapse and incontinence worsened and her husband divorced her, leaving her destitute.
Through the STT Program, Salia was identified as needing surgery. She was transported to Aira Hospital and successfully treated.
Now, Salia's life has changed. Beaming and holding her son in her lap, Salia told us that she doing well, supporting herself and her son by selling soap and other goods in the market.
But this story starts years before we ever met Salia.
A small gift from The Hasans, at the Hasan Family Foundation, opened the doors for VHP to reach these Muslim communities. In a country often divided by ethnic and religious differences, Seeme's gift opened doors of understanding.
