Harald Hoven's Adventure to India

A Seed Fund to celebrate a Seed Saver!

Harald Hoven has received an invitation to travel to Delhi, India this November for the 19th Organic World Congress of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements where he will make a presentation about his work at Raphael Garden. There he can also network with organic and biodynamic farmers and seed-savers from around the world.  Presenters at this conference are not paid or supported in any financial way unless they come from a developing country. This allows the hosting organization to put funds towards supporting folks from those countries who would like to attend but don’t have the means to accomplish this on their own.  Harald has the burden of funding his entire trip to India, and feels that it is important that he be able to make this contribution of his knowledge and many years of experience so that others can see the importance of seed growing within the farm individuality.

During this trip, he also hopes to visit other BD and transitioning farmers on the subcontinent, networking and sharing his knowledge. This is a place that Harald has been wanting to visit for some time and as a gift from his community of supporters, we can help make it happen!

“Somehow I hope,” he says, “that the little fire of my life’s work can rage and spread to inspire others to take up this work.”

We invite you to help us create a sabbatical for Harald that will show him our gratitude for the years of service and leadership he has given to the Biodynamic movement.

A Little Background

All of us who know Harald have seen how he has selflessly dedicated himself to the earth for the last 30 years, growing and serving the Biodynamic movement throughout this country. On the local level, he created Raphael Garden, a place of restorative beauty, healing, and nourishment that has welcomed thousands of people through the decades. There, he has shared his passion for holistic gardening as an apprentice trainer, workshop leader, wise counselor and consultant for hundreds of people.

Though Harald’s work began early in the morning and often extended until midnight many days of the year, he always managed to find ways to keep expanding his service.  He helped found and organize the Northern California Biodynamic Association, produced and distributed BD preps to farmers throughout the state, consulted regularly with the national BD association, served on national and international biodynamic boards and committees, and has been an active biodynamic seed breeder and saver producing over 60 varieties for sale through various biodynamic and organic seed catalogs.

As his years of service at Raphael Garden have come to an end, Harald is looking for his next step. Harald is not only a gardener: he is an artist and a scientist, and he believes that by deepening his skills as a natural scientist and plant observer he will be able to make significant contributions to the fields of apprentice training, lecturing and, most importantly, seed saving.  He is now looking toward having more free time to bring his knowledge of seeds and the essential nature of seed saving for maintaining farm individuality and biodiversity out into the world.

Some Words from Harald

“I’m not able to fund this trip on my own so I am asking all of you to help me bring this work out into the world.  Through your contributions, I will be able to make the journey to India to attend and present at this conference and hopefully extend my trip a bit so that I can take up a study of the native flora and cultivated crops that grow there.  I would like to expand my knowledge of India’s plant life so that I can have a better sense of what is living there, what different forces are at work in different parts of the world that effect plant growth, and how I can support the Biodynamic movement in India and the world.”

Our goal is to raise $5,000 to cover the cost of travel, accommodations, and food while Harald is teaching and exploring India.  We already have our first seed donor who has pledged $1,000! Help keep the momentum going.  Share this page through all your social media outlets and email contacts who you think would like to support Harald’s travels.  No donation is too small!
