handicap van for Warren

Warren needs your help to get to the doctor.  Eight years ago, the 56 year old veteran suffered from a stroke leaving him totally paralyzed on the left side of his body and limited speech.  Now totally dependent on his aging parents, Warren is experiencing extreme leg swelling which could be an indicator for blood clots.  Warren lives in Jasper, GA., a small north Georgia town that does not have the medical facilities necessary to  treat this new development.  He must travel to Atlanta.  The problem?  The family needs a van which can be wheelchair accessible to transport the 6' , 250 pound man.  The only vehicle owned by his parents is an old pickup truck.  Prior to this development of swelling, his medical needs were handled with the county van that provides transportation to doctors within the county only.
Why We Are Helping Warren
Not only is Warren a veteran with 5 years of service... his step-father who has raised him since he was a baby, is also a retired Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 149.  Our purpose as a post is all about veterans helping veterans as well as community support.  What better project than to help one of our own members whose son is homebound except for doctor visits to the local hospital.
Why We Need Your Help
Warren served in the National Guard 5 years but was never mobilized overseas.  Because his service was Guard, not Active Army, he does not qualify for any veteran benefits.  Warren's mother suffered severe back injuries 2 years before his stroke and had to leave her medical career as an emergency room tech.  His father, also with health issues, works an occasional electrician job when he can get them and otherwise lives on his social security and SP5 Army retirement.  They make enough to barely get by, but too much for government assistance.  Life is hard for this family, but they don't complain.  In fact, it was years of knowing Joe and Cola before knowing they had a disabled son.
How You Can Help Warren
Please consider donating to the van drive for Warren.  So far, our efforts in our local community have raised a little over $7,000.  The van needed with a dropped floor due to his height is $29,000.  Donations of any size can make this goal a reality if we get enough friends to help.   Also, if you feel this veteran deserves our help, please share this site with your friends.  Only if we all pitch in to help where we can will Warren be able to receive the medical treatment that could save his life.
