Hey, my name's Tom.
I am going on a trip to India next month with my school. I wanted to go there with a better understanding of the country so I did a bit of research. This led me to discover that there are many issues in regard to the lack of education and health services for many children in India.
I have decided that I am going to walk 3km on my hands in the month of August to raise money and awareness for those children in need. I will be spending a week with Daly college during my trip and they are involved in the India Washroom Project.
All Funds raised will be going to the:
India Washroom Project
In 2011, India’s Supreme Court ruled that every public school must have toilets. However, a study by Indian children’s rights organization CRY, found that one in 10 schools still do not have basic facilities and only 18 percent of schools have separate toilets for girls. In a quarter of all schools with facilities, the toilets are in a bad condition or unusable.
Last year, the drop-out rate among girls in the 7-16 age group shot up, when over 14% girls went missing from schools – particularly in rural parts of India. Findings of a national survey also said that poor facilities in government schools, namely a lack of toilets, continue to push girls out of mainstream education because they feel so vulnerable.
This project works with Daly College, in Indore, the International Round Square charity and #DMUGlobal to build new washrooms in schools and teach English.
I personally believe that this is an extremely important cause and i hope you feel the same way.
It would make me feel so much better travelling to this amazing country with something to contribute.
I think my hands will cope :)
