Haiti NHH orphanage

Give yourself the chance to improve our world by proving that we care for each other.

We are a group of friends from New York and New Jersey that after visiting Haiti decided to help New Horizon Home (NHH) orphanage with the agreement of the manager of the orphanage, Jean Alex Veillard.
We were introduced to him, by our mutual friend who became aware of the project while serving in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

We visited them few months ago and saw a tremendous need for aid within the orphanage for even the simplest things, such as making sure the children were properly fed each day and receiving the appropriate medical care. After several days supporting the orphanage in Haiti, we decided to raise funds for them after agreeing with the manager of the orphanage in Haiti, Jean Alex Veillard.

Haiti is one of the most unfortunate countries in the world.  It remains an example of the brutality of colonialism and the ruthlessness of continuing race discrimination on the international scale, which together with the fact that the country is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters results in 59% (2018 estimate) of population living below the poverty line. It is estimated that there are nearly 30,000 orphans currently living in Haiti (2018 estimate).

Literacy rate in Haiti is low and much below the average for Latin American and Caribbean countries. A major earthquake in 2010 exacerbated an already difficult system by destroying infrastructure and displacing 50 to 90% of students.

NHH Orphanage is registered as an institution of childcare in the Social Welfare and Research Institute of Haiti and only hosts resource-less and abandoned children, orphans or minors in situations of need.
The institution is totally dependent on external funding for its maintenance and development, not having any kind of governmental or fixed support.

NHH initially hosted 20 girls from 3 to 6 years old that had lost their father or mother during the earthquake and was created by Jean Alex Veillard and his wife, Johanne Jean Louis, on April 9, 2013.  This determined Haitian couple provided the children with lodging and education, within a loving and respectful environment, in order to allow the children to develop both physically and psychologically. They strive for an age-appropriate education, with the hope of turning each child into responsible citizens, with a full awareness of their rights and duties.

Since 2013, the orphanage grew in the number of children and today hosts 67 of them, mostly girls. The girls are now older with average age being 10. The secondary education is more expensive and financial needs of older girls are higher. However, the funding structure did not expand proportionately, and the orphanage is now facing serious problems ensuring just the basic necessities required to keep the children alive.

Our goal is to find new, consistent funding sources to ensure the children´s development and to create a transparent and clear accountancy. The orphanage runs on $3,200 a month, which only provides for the  most basic necessities and the children are on only two simple meals a day.  In order to allow for better medical care, education and a third meal,  we will need $1,500 a month more. The "GoFundMe" funds will be used to improve the diet of the girls in the coming months; our calculations were that with $10,000 they could provide a third meal for a whole year. The entire sum donated in this campaign will be forwarded to Alex -  via bank transfer/Western Union to provide children with proper food.
Everything above our goal would be invested to improve health care and education of the girls.

In the world young women 15-29 are more than 3 times as likely as young men to not be in employment, education or training, according to UNICEF. Education can help change stereotypes we have held onto too long and take advantage of the talent and creative voices of girls to make a more vibrant and equitable world.
If you want to make the world a better place and safer for young women, please consider supporting the education of these girls and give them a voice.

They are relying on us and you...

We are very grateful and on behalf of the girls would like to thank everyone who supports this project.
You all are helping a lot and truly making a difference!
