Haiti Dental Missions

All of these beautiful babies received oral hygiene instructions along with toothbrush, toothpaste and an exam for future needs. If it was an emergent need they received a ticket and came back to see me after all screenings/cleanings/flouride treatments were placed.
Example of the head, back and neck positions of the patient, assistant and dentist while working in a regular chair.

I’m Dr. Katrina Mattison Chalwe and I am trying to start a dental clinic in Haiti. I returned from La Mer Frappe Haiti in April and would like to return 3 times a year. On this last trip i was provided fluoride and able to give it to each child in the school. We saw over 200 people total but procedures were very limited. We were able to perform cleanings, surgical extractions, simple extractions, and atraumatic restorative therapy (ART). Basically, no equipment so things were done by hand. We did  triage on this porch and our dental clinic was located inside.

Pictured here are some of the children from the school, once school lets out they go home change and come back to play soccer. I would like to rent dental equipment from a christian dental group here in the states  and transport it there for services. The need for dentistry in Haiti is great but GOD IS GREATER. Feel free to ask me any questions. I’m happy to share more pictures and my journal from my last trip to Haiti. I will be posting excerpts from my journal periodically. Thank you in advance for your help and God bless!!!

Supplies that were donated and we were able to fly it in with us and use. Can you imagine that we used at least one of everything. The other items that are left are awaiting us in Haiti for our return. Including our 25 quart sterilization pot.

This picture above is a prayer walk we took thru the community. All of the children came out and followed us. Notice some don't even have on shoes.

This page is being used to collect funds for the equipment rental, antibiotics that we will need, shipping costs of the equipment, and translation services for when we arrive.  We currently have 3 dentists, 3 assistants, and 3 hygienists signed up to go in October. We want to move as swiftly as God will allow and we need your help. This will require equipment rental and shipping.

Pictured above is the make shift dental clinic we were working with while in Haiti in April. As you can imagine the patient had to hold their head back at almost a 90 degree angle and the dentist had to bend at a 90 degree angle. Take note of the lamp, all electricity is run on a generator which is operated by fuel. We actually have the opportunity to rent chairs this time!

The deposit for equipment rental is 100 dollars per piece. This is separate from the actual rental prices these are listed below. I’m estimating at least 14 pieces. This means we need 1400 dollars to cover the deposit for the equipment.

4 dental units with compressors attached. (200 each)

3 filling kits (100 each)
2 hygiene kits (75 each)
2 extraction kits (100 each)
3 Dental chair/doctor stools  (50 each)

This means 1700 dollars in rental fees. We also have to pay shipping fees to get the equipment shipped round trip to us and  to fly this equipment over with us which is anywhere from 25-100 dollars per piece due to sizing. (1700 rental fee + 1400 reservation fee)

We also need translators which run about 100 dollars per week each. I'm estimating we will need 5 just for the dental clinic.

Anything you can give to help would be great. Thank you! Please share this post and as always prayers will always be helpful as well.

God bless!
