Hailey's Journey For Health

Donation protected
My sister-in-law Angel took my niece Hailey to the pediatrician on September 13 to get a bump on her collarbone checked out. The doctor ordered an xray and, after getting the results, decided to send them to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh for more extensive testing. Once at Children's, Hailey got another xray and an MRI. Immediately after the MRI the doctors informed Hailey and Angel that she actually has a tumor on her collarbone and that is what was causing her swelling and pain. The 2 weeks that followed were very busy with lots of different tests like a ct scan, biopsy, blood work and PET scan. 16 very long days after the biopsy, they finally got the results...Hailey has a low grade osteosarcoma on her right clavicle. For those of you that don't speak doctor gibberish, I'll break it down for you. Sarcoma means bone cancer. All sarcomas are rare. Osteo is the most common type of sarcoma that usually starts in kids' and young adults' large bones like the arm or leg and spreads to smaller bones like the clavicle. The grade is the speed at which the cancer is growing and spreading. High grade means it's growing quickly and low grade means it's growing at a slower pace. She had surgery scheduled Oct 24 to remove the tumor. Once the tumor is removed and they can get a better look at it, they will know if it is localized to just her collarbone or if it is somewhere else that didn't show up on her PET scan and has spread to the collarbone. If it's localized, she may not need any further treatment like chemo or radiation.
