Starting this fall, I will be teaching 5th grade at the Young Achievers School in Mattapan and I would love your support as I build a classroom environment that helps my students be successful learners, thinkers, and scholars.
Young Achievers is a K-8 school that is committed to practicing "social justice through academic excellence" and "maximiz[ing] each student’s potential for critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, community involvement, and responsible leadership." Throughout the school year, we will grapple with complex math and science concepts and connect them to our lives, our communities, and the world through hands-on, experiential learning activities. In addition, we will explore our histories and practice the arts of reading, writing, and collaborative dialogue.
In order to support my students' growth as critical thinkers and responsible leaders, my hope is to create a classroom that is organized, comfortable, and dynamic. As a new teacher who just finished grad school, this task will be difficult to accomplish on my own, which is why I am calling on you, friends and family, to help me make this hope a reality!
Sure, my school will provide the essentials like pencils, dry-erase markers, desks, and text books. However, the rest is up to us! With your support, we can add the following supplies and furniture:
- Books for the class library
- Shelves to hold all of those books
- Small white boards for more interactive math practice activities
- A lamination machine to protect important materials (and reuse them in future years!)
- A couple of comfy chairs and a rug for independent reading time
- Supplies & resources for the reflection space
- Subscriptions to magazines like Nat Geo Kids, Time for Kids, and Explorer
- Organizational supplies, like cubbies, bins, and pencil cases, to help students keep track of their materials
- Math and science games
- Supplemental materials for science experiments
- Composition notebooks and folders for each subject
- Standing lamp and string lights for ambient lighting during independent work time
- ....and more!
