Gylly Beach Sea Swimmers Space

WeSUP Paddleboard Centre is excited to announce our plans to set up and manage The Gylly Beach Sea Swimmers Space.
With thanks to the generosity of Gylly Cafe owners Viv and Simon Daw, for donating the space, we are hoping to raise a minimum of £600 to bring this idea to life.
If you've ever visited Gylly Beach, you'll have marveled at the dedicated sea swimmers, and also probably questioned their sanity! A group of women and men, solely clothed in their bathers and the flash of a brightly coloured swimming cap, perform an admirable routine every day, rain or shine, snow or storm, whether the sea is as flat as a lake, or a tempestuous soup. In conditions that would send most of us back to bed, these inspiring humans truly represent everything that being Cornish sea folk means. Some do it as a gaggling group, for others it’s a soulful, meditative pursuit. In whichever way they do it, we love them for the spirit they bring to the beach, and we’d love to give them their own space. Currently these swimmers are left to change on the sand, leaving their belongings on the beach, vulnerable to the weather, seagulls and dogs.
The first £600 that we raise will go straight towards establishing the space. This will be next to WeSUP HQ on Gylly Beach, where we will build safe, waterproof storage, seating and a footbath. An additional £1000 will be used to build a resilient waterproof sail cover for the area, and a further £500 would be used to renew the astro-turf flooring. Any money not spent will be retained for the general maintenance which is commonplace with outdoor areas.
The space will be open for local sea swimmers who will be able to obtain a membership card from WeSUP. They’ll just need to show the card to us each time they want to use the space to check in. This will ensure that the space will stay exclusively for the sea swimmers and won’t become too crowded with summer visitors. The space will be free to use, but we hope that regular users will donate via an honesty box to help with general maintenance and upkeep.
