Baby Gunther's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
My name's Gennessa, and I am writing this on behalf of my lovely and handsome nephew, Gunther, (a 4 month old German Shepherd puppy) and April, his human and one of my best friend's.

Just as a little background on April... she is known to most as Mom, and is one of the most caring and selfless people I have ever met. We lived together in college and she always made sure I was up and out when I needed to be, spoiled me with dinner when I came home late, and just was (and is) the most reliable, loyal friend you can ask for- similar to a mother, hence the nickname.

When April started college she had a bit of a rough time. Her family moved to Florida, and she chose to stay in New Hampshire to be with her dad, who was battling lung cancer. He passed away her freshman year of college, leaving her to tough out one of the hardest years of adjustment with the rest of her family living out of reach. She coped by playing rugby and dog sitting whenever she got the opportunity.

Not only did she make it through this trying time, but she graduated last year with her Master’s degree in higher education, and landed an awesome job at Bryant University in Rhode Island.

One awesome thing about Bryant is that they allow staff to have dogs, in spite living on campus in the residence halls. April is quite obsessed with dogs, particularly German Shepherds, since her dad had three while she was growing up.  I don't think declaring her a dog lover really explains it, but I will do my best. She is constantly dog sitting for others, and although she is typically rather reserved and shy, it is always fun to watch her run up to a stranger and ask to pet their dog.

So when the opportunity to adopt Gunther came about, she grabbed it! They have been having an awesome time getting to know each other over the past month. He already knows many of his basic commands and follows her around dotingly. It's pretty obvious watching the two interact they are just meant for each other :)

Yesterday, I got the news from April that Gunther was in Emergency Care. He had a high fever, accelerated heart rate, and was very dehydrated. They went through various tests for Lyme disease and other probable illnesses, to no avail. He stayed overnight, and after a spinal tap today (where he had to be put under general anesthesia), they have decided he most likely has a form of autoimmune meningitis and will have to be on medication for the next 8 months at least.

As all pet owners know, pets are expensive, so April has been properly saving and building funds, but as you can imagine, the vet bills have become quite the overwhelming. I’m hoping that if people realize what a great person April is, that they will come together to help her and Gunther have a chance! He is already the sweetest pup, and so perfect for her I cannot picture her with a more spectacular pal. Please help!

Thank you so much for reading!
