LGBTQ+ Editorial Exhibition: GUAPO

The series titled "GUAPO", which is Spanish for "handsome", originated in Toronto, Canada. We set out to meet local members of the LGBTQ + community (more specifically those who identify with male pronouns) that have risen above the struggle of societal pressures. This collection features individuals that have been exposed to racism, bullying, generalizations and many other forms of discrimination. We celebrate body positivity, we embrace diversity, and most of all we celebrate equality.
We are looking for funding to take a small team of 2 into South East Asia starting in October. We hope to explore cities where it isn't widely acceptable to be a member of the LGBTQ + community. We will meet indivuduals across the US, South East Asia and Australia. Some of these places are more progressive than others. We want to bring light to gay-on-gay discrimination but also the everyday challenges that are prevelent in less progressive cities. We have 3 main focuses in the end.
1. Create awareness
2. Build an exhibition to share our work
3. Potentially have a published book.
Embracing who we are and celebrting others for who they are is what we stand by. We want to photograph those who are confident in who they are because of what they have been through. Not because of what they look like or where they are from.
In essence, Guapo is deeper than Photoshop, beautiful lighting or overall appealing looks. This portrait series is meant to dig deeper into what it means to be handsome and to identify as a male memeber of the LGBTQ+ community.
