The Desire To Inspire Scholarship

Hello there, I hope you’re having a wonderful day!

My name is Christel Wekon-Kemeni and I’m currently a medical student at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. I am also the creator of Black Man, M.D. (BlackManMD.com), a blog that is dedicated to crushing negative stereotypes and providing both resources and inspiration for those hoping to pursue a career in healthcare.

As a direct beneficiary of a full-tuition scholarship in college and multiple scholarships during my time in medical school, I fully understand the incredible impact that these financial awards can have on one’s life. Not only do they provide an affordable avenue for a high-quality education, but they also provide the recipients a wealth of amazing opportunities that may have otherwise been deemed inaccessible. Because of these reasons, I had made it a personal mission of mine to one day be in a position to provide scholarships to others in order to alleviate any financial burdens that may be hindering them in reaching their goals. I always figured that I wouldn’t be able to do that until further along in the future when I became a well-established physician because, as I’m sure you know, medical school ain’t cheap.

However, after being inspired by a colleague in a similar position as me who had the same desire to give back to those hoping to fulfill their dreams, I came to the realization that there was no need for me to wait until I had money to give back. Instead, I could fulfill my yearning to give back by utilizing other creative ways to raise money for scholarships! One of those ways includes GoFundMe, the same platform that I used to raise funds to help me transition from college to medical school. So I ultimately decided that I would love to be able to use this platform to help a young student who is not only in need, but who is also making a determined effort to inspire others in some way, shape or form. And thus, the idea of The Desire To Inspire Scholarship was born!

There are a lot of scholarships out there that award students for a variety of reasons. However, I haven’t come across a scholarship yet that specifically awards students for serving as an inspiration to others. Inspiration was a very crucial part in my upbringing, as I’m sure that it was in yours. The act of being inspired is such a powerful feeling, and it has the potential of enabling someone to achieve feats that he or she may have once deemed impossible. We all have been inspired at some point in our lives; do you remember how that made you feel? Do you remember what that feeling allowed you to believe you could accomplish? Do you remember the person/people who gave you the opportunity to experience that wonderful feeling? Inspiration is such an important aspect of an individual’s development, so important that I had this burning desire to create a scholarship dedicated to highlighting people who provide this wonderful sensation!

This scholarship, named after the slogan of Black Man, M.D., will be dedicated to recognizing young individuals from historically underrepresented minority groups who are interested in a career in healthcare and are making determined efforts to inspire others in some way, shape or form. The scholarship could be used for educational purposes and/or for the purpose of pushing their mission of inspiration forward. However, in order for this scholarship to exist, there needs to be some source of funding for it. This is where your generosity and your belief of the mission would come into play! I believe that by just giving the GoFundMe minimum donation of $5 to help fund this scholarship, you will be making a huge impact on someone’s life! What’s even better, you’ll be inspiring someone else to give in order to help make this scholarship a reality and will also be playing a part in inspiring the future scholarship recipient in unimaginable ways! I fully believe that there are more than enough generous people in this world who would give a few dollars to help this cause, and there’s a very good chance that you’re one of them. With enough people giving small amounts, the financial goal can easily be reached and someone will have the chance to be rewarded for their work in inspiring and motivating others! So if you would be so kind as to spare a few dollars and spread the word about this fundraiser, you would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!
