Our dear friend and neighbor passed away unexpectedly last week. Gretchen was nothing but a considerate and wonderful neighbor for the 5 years we have been in our home. Our boys absolutely adored Gretchen, she was a considerate birthday gift giver since they were both born and also always gave them Halloween gifts . Gretchen also sent thoughtful cards to our family around the holidays, on my birthday, and our anniversary. Sometimes just a card to say what a wonderful mother I was to my beautiful sons. She and her husband, Dave, stepped in to watch our dog Olive, help water plants while we were away, and Dave has even cut our grass without being asked on more than a few occasions. Neither Gretchen nor Dave has ever been to busy to visit with Jude and Elijah and the boys are heartbroken over her passing - though Jude is glad she is not in pain and in a better place.

Gretchen was a brittle diabetic and struggled with numerous health complications stemming from her diabetes. She was a lover of rescuing dogs, especially older and geriatric ones that not many people would have wanted to adopt. Before she stopped working due to health concerns, she was a perdiatric oncology nurse, and there is no doubt in my mind she treated every child with whom she worked as if they were her very own. She regularly texted me to see if I needed anything when she was out running errands, and our family will miss her dearly.

Only weeks ago Dave and Gretchen were forced to take on more debt using a personal loan as the co-payment for a medical procedure she required. The cost of medications and the sad reality of our health insurance and health care costs in our country has left Dave piled with debts and facing losing his home.

Matthew and I are no strangers to unexpected medical procedures and without his military service connections it scares me to think how we would pay for his medications and procedures, weekly doctor visits. I know we are lucky in that respect, and many are not. Medical debt is no joke and I see firsthand the crippling devastation it is causing for the Fleming family in the wake of an unexpected tragedy.

Creating this GofundMe is a small thing I can do to possibly help ease just a bit of Dave and their son Daniel's suffering. I am asking my friends and family to reach into their pockets and donate anything they are able, every little bit will help!
