Greg Rothoff Treatment Expenses

Donation protected
My Uncle Greg has been diagnosed with MDS and has been in treatment for the majority of the year. It has been a long and rough road for them, and he is finally getting the transplant he needs! Which means bills are going through the roof for them.. I would really like to get them the help that they need! I have asked my Aunt Sandy to help explain the situation a little more and have copied that below. Any and all help is so greatly appreciated. They deserve it so much! If you can’t give at this time, please share so we can get as many people to see as possible!!

MDS (Mylodysplastic syndrome) is a rare form of Cancer that affects mostly elderly men( over 60). The cause is not really known. It is believed to be from being exposed to Chemicals or hereditary. His prognosis was 3 months without treatment... 1 1/2 years with Chemo... and only chance of cure Stem Cell Transplant.  Because of location of Treatment we had to go out of network of our insurance otherwise we would have to travel back  & forth to Detroit for his care. Very little is known about his family male history. On his mother’s side. Grandfather died of TB when his other was a child.. Her only brother died of a heart attack about 50. His father died of heart attack at 78.and his fathers brothers all died in a mining accident when they were about 30. As for chemical exposure, could have been exposed working construction. He worked for a company several years that used to work foam insulating in several chemical companies. Plus when building houses they treated the foundations to prevent termites. Then I the army... there was all those chemicals that he was exposed to.. so I believe it was from chemical exposure. As he says.. “ always worked hard, not smart”. He has always been a good, hard working loyal provider. We have 2 wonderful sons and have led a good clean lifestyle. He did smoke as a teenager until all the education about black lung disease in the 80’s.
As for treatments. He has been having Chemo since May. About once a month, he has had blood & platelet transfusions because his blood is not producing healthy red, white, or platelet cells. For his Transplant .. he will be in Spectrum-Butterworth Transplant Center in Grand Rapids for about a month. Then we have to stay within 30 minutes of the hospital for at least another month up to-a year depending on how his body accepts or rejects the Transplant. ‘‘Tis scares. But it is our only chance of survival.
