Greencastle Area Residents Group (GARG) is a voluntary community based group set up over 20 years ago in Greencastle, Co. Down. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of living, working or visiting our area will know that it's a special place, 'a place apart'.
The reason we're asking for your help is because we need support to protect this special place so we can all continue to enjoy its beauty and wildlife for generations to come.
The aims of the Group are:
-To promote the benefits of the inhabitants of the Area of Greencastle with particular regard to the conservation of the rural environment and character of the Area, with the object of improving the quality
of life for all the residents.
-To preserve the built and natural heritage of the Area.
-To oppose anything that would have a detrimental effect on the Area.
-To effect these activities without distinction on a cross community and non-political basis.
Our area is protected under the RAMSAR Convention, is a Special Protection Area (SPA), Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Green Island is the home to harbour and grey seals and the visiting Arctic Terns make it their home during the summer months.
Otters have been spotted on the shore during this summer and we have several bats roosts located along the Greencastle Pier Road.
A planning application has recently been approved for the operation of a vehicular ferry service across Carlingford Lough between Greencastle and Greenore (Co.Louth).
This decision will have a detrimental effect on Greencastle and the surrounding area, particularly with regard to the natural and built heritage as well as wildlife and environment. The area is protected by national and international environmental designations as listed above and is a site of historical significance- namely the 13th Century Royal Castle and the Norman Church.
GARG has been at the forefront of a campaign to protect Greencastle from this inappropriate development and we are seeking to stop the Greencastle to Greenore ferry proposal.
At this stage of our campaign we are seeking professional advice and support in taking our campaign to the next level and needless to say this does not come cheap.
Calling on all ex-Pats, friends, the wider community and all those who support our campaign.
