@Renita Rhodes we all know what shuckin and jivin is. Its a racial slur you used against this AFRICAN AMERICAN band because you hate Trump and probably white people too. So you already discredited yourself as a fool. More aptly a fool in a crab barrel. Go somewhere and get to work raising money for a cause YOU believe in and stop trying to be somebody's personal God. You didn't die for nobody and nobody has to do anything to please you. We out!

@Vani Dani Bee So what? WE DO! Nobody heard a word from you until now. So get your lazy alumnas self up and RAISE SOME MONEY to fix all the issues you cited. You cant tell people what to do with their own money. How ignorant is that? We're not "seeking money from an administration". This is called Go Fund Me. People give their OWN money for a cause they want to. Just like if you put up a page and outlined your issues maybe somebody would give you some money for it. Don't waste your time training to rain on this band's parade. They are going. They are going to be outstanding and we are going to pay for it!

From the College's own board of trustees: Talladega College is dedicated to producing well rounded leaders who think independently, who are self-assured, and who are committed to intellectual growth and service to their community. What a great opportunity and honor to go to the inauguration. Rather than following the echo chamber that social media has become or bowing to pressure from those that want you to conform to their beliefs, take the advice of your board of trustees and think independently. People who embrace diversity sometimes tend to do so only if it agrees with his or her perceptions. You have an excellent opportunity to expand your perceptions and use this as an occasion to become more well rounded. Set the example for others to follow. Yes, I made a donation. As a former marching band member and Alabama native, I wouldn't want this likely once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be lost to these young people.

I gave a donation, just to spite Renita, because obviously she won't support her school. I'm proud to help these kids have a once in a life time experience. Don't make it more than it is, Renita.

Dear Renita, I am a 66 year old white woman who went door to door in an all white neighborhood in 1963 at age 13 to ask for signatures on a petition to pass the civil rights act. My own family had their prejudices. I think primarily because they had not been exposed to people of color. They didn't want to hurt anyone. I took my religion seriously and believed in equality. It was a philosophical endeavor. When I was 17 and had an opportunity to spend the day with an inner city black child, we took a trolley to the city. It was 1967 I drew the stares not only of white folks, but black folks alike. Neither race seemed welcoming. To my shame I hid in a movie theater with the child until it was time to meet my mother for lunch before she went to work. My Mom took the little girls' hand and we walked to lunch. My Mother didn't care about the people around us. I realized what a hypocrite I was and took stock of myself. That was a real turning point in knowing myself, looking at my prejudices and cowardice and making a decision to change all that. Over the years I have enjoyed friendships with people of all colors, backgrounds, religions, etc. I raised my family to respect all people, and I didn't freak out when people outside of our race were dated or befriended. I tell you this because people can make choices not to hate, not to divide, and not to cause hurt. Please don't demean the fine marching band by implying that they are lowering themselves to entertain whites. Don't demean people who want to expand their living experiences. I don't know if you have been hurt, but please try to choose tolerance over racial division. Don't waste your life being angry. It is too short. Be an activist, but a committed loving one. Respect the fact that people can have opinions other than yours, as they hopefully will respect yours. I wish you only the best.

Renits, sad your so angry and hateful. This is exactly our county's number 1 problem, it would be wonderful to really have intelligent discourse based in facts and not emotion but it's like, when a mind is mad, made up there is no fixing anything. You are part of the problem, further more this is not where you despairage this wonderful performing group!

Kimberly Hill, You state that only ignorant Trump supporters are donating. I beg to differ, but can only respond with MY "credentials", as I don't know the others who've posted support. I am an immigrant from Mexico who grew up with 8 siblings supported by a laborer father and a stay at home mom. I have a doctorate from The University of California, San Francisco, and I know lot of history, including how Talladega was started. Pres elect Trump said some dumb things during the campaign, but I am taking him at his word, until he doesn't live up to it, that he will strive to help the inner city with a different approach than the failed Democrat party one that has been tried and failed for decades. As a christian, I believe that we are all children of God, and I therefore support all people, and will help Blacks in need where I am aware of the need and can help. I believe that the great majority of the people that voted for Trump did it for reasons other than the hate you ascribe to them. For example, as an Immigrant, I support stopping illegal immigration because I believe it's bad for our country, not because Im racist against other Mexicans. Are blacks who voted for Trump Racists? Hateful?

Sorry you guys are getting pressure not to go. I didn't put pressure on people to not attend or perform at Obamas celebration. This is a once in a lifetime experience, take it, make the best of it and be part of the peaceful tradition of the transitioning of presidents. You may just enjoy yourself. Safe travels.

What some of the naysayers don't seem to grasp is that the band director sent an application to march in the parade weeks before the election - you know, when a Hillary victory was assured. The band can't help that Trump won, but should they be denied a place on the national stage because he did? Some of these kids have probably never been out of the state and now they have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play for AMERICA. Stop raining on their parade.

Renita and Vani, what a shame that you can't be proud of "your" college. They have apparently worked hard to get where they are & it's an honor to be asked to perform at the inauguration. To say that this goes against what "your" college was founded upon, is IGNORANT. How are we as a nation supposed to overcome racist hatred, when people like you can't let it go!!!!! I get it that you're proud of your ancestry and black history, but damn quit with the hatred and divide!!!!

I am very excited even though I can only leave a small donation ( single Mom of Two) for this exceptional band to visit my hometown!I grew up in the Washington DC metro area, so I am spoiled in all that DC has to offer its nearby residents. I hope that this band will be able to spend a few days visiting the awesome and inspiring museums and monuments. I am proud that the University President, Billy Hawkins has decided to do what is best for his students and not bow to public pressure. I got a lot of flack because I am Hispanic and voted for Trump.
