For two years our library team has visited a dozen libraries, specifically to view the children’s areas within the library. We have discovered some wonderful, engaging and magical spaces for children and their caregivers to come together with other kids and parents; for the children to learn cooperatively and for parents to share their struggles and triumphs of raising kids. Our library staff, volunteers and board members believe that our area children deserve these magical spaces in their small-town libraries too.

Unfortunately, at the library, our dreams are often bigger than our budget.

We predict 40,000 people will walk through our doors by year-end; that translates to nearly 130 people per day. Many of those visitors are children. The number of books checked out to local children continues to astound us; our library maintains a 43% increase over three years in children and young adult check-outs! We love the frequent visits and increased check-outs, but the children’s area is showing a lot of wear. Table legs are loose, the paint is chipping off tables, puppets have missing eyeballs and our Winnie-the-Pooh and Tigger decals had to be thrown out because of missing limbs! With the exception of a few maintenance items our children’s area furnishings have not been updated since 2001.

The Library Board of Trustees and Friends of the Library have addressed the increased use of children’s books and children’s visits by increasing the children’s book budget from a few hundred dollars a year to $2,000 a year. The library staff is rewarded daily by seeing children get excited about the new books the library now carries! This spring, the library board created a new librarian position that will specifically provide programs to youth and be our resident expert on children’s books. This is Grantsburg’s first ever Youth Services Librarian! The Library Board and Friends have also started a fund of a few thousand dollars to refurbish the children’s area because they see the heavy use and wear.

We’re pretty excited about all the Grantsburg Public Library is doing to better serve our youngest patrons, but there is still a lot of work to do to meet their needs. That’s why we are asking for your help.

Use of funds

Over the next year, the library will add commercial-grade child-sized furniture, the library staff is currently working with an artist and designer to build a washable wall mural that incorporates sensory panels. We also have plans to add a sensory play table and to complement the library’s popular puppet house, we would like to add a set of machine-washable puppets. Our library also desires to install special furniture for babies and toddlers.

Commercial-grade cushioned benches and armchairs will be added.  Also, for the child’s caregivers, the library plans to invest in quality child-rearing books and other materials that would be displayed within easy view of the children’s play area.
