In November 2020, the Grand Theatre celebrated our second anniversary since our grand reopening. The past two years have flown by and we greatly appreciate the generous support that you continue to provide. The Grand has provided outstanding entertainment to thousands of visitors from across the region--from families to schools to church groups and more.
As you know, the renovation of the Grand was a huge undertaking and thanks to the generous support of people like you and vendors in our community, we were able to accomplish a million dollar project for half a million dollars. However the project is not paid off and we continue to make monthly loan payments. In a normal year we are able to make this payment. However, 2020 was anything but normal with the COVID-19 pandemic and 2021 continues to bring unexpected challenges.
Last March, the Grand Theatre was required by the Governor to close our doors and we remained closed until the end of June. Thanks to the creativity and faithfulness of our volunteers and part time staff, our drive-by popcorn sales were a successful fundraising effort to provide income while the doors were closed. Unfortunately, the pandemic has affected the film industry as a whole, not just the Grand. Most new movies were originally delayed to 2021. We worked to show classic movies, with limited income, through the remainder of 2020, which was aided by sponsorship from general business and individuals. Early in 2021, major studios began to offer new movies on premium streaming services simultaneous with their release to theaters. That has further impacted ticket sales and attendance at theaters across the nation, including here in Stamford.
Today, we are asking for your help. The Grand Theatre remains a non-profit, community organization that endeavors to provide local, affordable entertainment. We rely on donations to supplement our ticket and concession income. We need our community’s support to continue this legacy in 2021 and beyond.
