MY STORY

My name is Gracelyn and I am a 20 year old Christian singer/songwriter and performer originally from Rhode Island, but currently living in Florida. Ever since I could remember, music has been a part of me. I remember being 5 years old and singing around the house and everywhere I went, even if it annoyed the people around me. I begged my parents for years to let me take music lessons and they told me to prove to them that I actually wanted it; and thats exactly what I did. When I was 9 years old I found a rusty, old, out-of-tune guitar in my basement and I taught myself how to play Brown Eyed Girl. My parents were blown away with my consistency and immediately signed me up for guitar lessons. A few years down the road, music wasn't only just a part of my life, but a part of my soul and who I was as a person. I never knew that I would lose myself to the point where music was a stranger to me.

When I was 12 years old I had my first seizure. From that day forward, playing music was the hardest thing for me to do. After I had my seizure, the other symptoms seemed to follow. I had lost part of my hearing and vision, was in constant pain, lost my ability to retain any information that people gave me, and most days I couldn't get myself out of bed. It killed me inside knowing that I was too weak to pick up my guitar and strum it, because I knew it was the one thing that was going to help me get through this. For years we went from doctor to doctor; from hospital to hospital, getting multiple tests done to my body, all so that doctors could tell my parents that I was lying and making all of this up. There were days where I was hopeful about the future and getting better and then there were days when I didn't think it was even worth it to get out of bed.

Eventually I was diagnosed with a plethora of diseases and disorders, including Epilepsy, Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, learning disorders, Chronic Fatigue syndrome and more. We also learned that I was vaccine injured through the HPV vaccine. Luckily, I was able to get some help and slowly but surely started to feel a bit better. It was still hard for me to pick up the guitar and do quick movements with my arms and hands, so I decided to teach myself the piano. We had a keyboard at my house and when I was feeling up to it, on my good days, I would sit there for hours teaching myself classical piano.

Growing up, I had a huge personality. I was into theatre, film, modeling, etc. I was interested in doing anything and everything where I could show off my character. Unfortunately, that was all lost when I became sick. But, when I was feeling a bit more like myself, my mom signed me up for a songwriting class that I absolutely did not want to go to. I was petrified of singing in front of people and having to do anything on a stage. But, she made me go anyways and it was the best thing she ever made me do. I was introduced to a ton of incredible singer-songwriters and got all of the support and advice that I was missing in my life. They even encouraged me to pick up the guitar again, and that is what started my love for songwriting and performing once more.

The more I wrote and performed, the more I wanted to do it all the time. When I was about 14, I heard about an open mic and decided to try it out. The host of the open mic's name was Jonas Woods and I didn't know it at the time, but he was going to change my life in such a positive way.

Jonas Woods has been a full-time touring christian artist for over 10 years. He has done shows with Newsboys, Casting Crowns, Matthew West, FFH, PETRA, Mute Math, Jeremy Camp, Jars of Clay, Leeland, and many many more. He is the former frontman and founder of the band Farewell June. He currently tours out of New England with his wife Becky and his two sons Hunter and Liam. When I met him, he quickly became one of my greatest friends and also someone that I looked up to and aspired to be. He became my mentor and we wrote songs together, worked on stage etiquette and even did some shows together around New England.

He is now also working alongside Chris and Anthony Hoisington of Brothers McClurg at Old Bear Studios as a producer. He contacted me recently saying that he wanted to help co-write and produce my next record, so here we are!

I am looking to raise $20,000. That would cover the expenses of a 7 song record with full use of Old Bear Studios in New York, every instrumentalist I would ever need, printing and duplicating the album, merchandise (T-shirts, stickers, etc.) for shows and travel expenses!

Throughout all of the tests, the good and the bad days, the one thing that never died was the love I had for music. I brought my little iPod with me to all of my doctors appointments and listened to all my favorite songs and artists and I immediately felt better. My faith in God and my pure love for music never wavered and is what got me through the hardest time in my life, thus far. I want to be able to share my music with the world, hoping that maybe I could help someone else get through their day with encouraging and positive tunes.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope it has touched you in some way.
