The Fort Benning Basic Training Support Group was created on June 30, 2016 by a small group of families that were new to the Army and looking to support one another in their journey. When this page was started, I don't think anyone even realized what it would become. The vision was to have a forum that loved ones could come to and seek information, share stories and gain strength, comfort and support of others experiencing the same emotions in sending their loved ones to Basic Combat Training at Fort Benning.
Tim and Julie Bates graciously took the helm of this amazing support group on Feb. 12, 2017 as their trainee, their son Zachary Bates, was a part of the 1% of this Country who wanted to make a difference in this world. He did just that. Because of his bravery and his Service, THIS support group is thriving. Tim and Julie have guided and comforted over 24.8 THOUSAND people through this Basic Training experience. We owe it ALL to Zach. Those of you who are members of our FABS support group know the impact that the Bates have had on so many families. I can honestly say that through their son, this family has made a difference in this world.
Tragically, on September 11, 2019, their son; their soldier, Zachary Bates lost his life in a tragic accident. While we rejoice that he is in heaven and at peace with our Lord, the heartache that our Army Family feels will never escape us. Zach was a caring, loving son and friend, and amazing musician. This Go Fund Me is being set up as a memorial fund to assist his family. They have shouldered each and every one of us at one time or another. It's our turn to be the shoulders to lean on. We asked that if you find it in your heart to help, please consider contributing.
These amazing people, Tim and Julie Bates, who may be strangers to many of you, shouldering their own burdens, offered to shoulder ours as well. They listened, shared, and in their loving way, they let us know that we are not alone. We are honored to return the favor and assure that Zachary’s legacy will always live on.
