A Mother's Promise

In August of 2014, April A. learned she would not be able to watch her five children grow into adults. Already suffering from diabetes, April contracted an infection that turned into Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Still mourning the loss of the children’s father three weeks earlier from a sudden heart attack, and with her death quickly approaching, April focused her energy on ensuring the welfare of her beloved children: Malayha (16), Mylan (13), Mya (10), Micah (6) & Makai (6). April turned to her mother, Dorothy A. Even though Dorothy was already taking care of her mentally/physically disabled adult son, she did what any mother would do—promised to take care of her grandchildren.
Through the high school in Dorothy’s town of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, The Myles Singleton Foundation (MSF) was made aware of the family’s situation in September 2014. MSF is a non-profit organization that provides holiday help for low income families as well as a variety of other support. The foundation chose to sponsor the family for Christmas and was able to have a face-to-face meeting with them. During the visit, it was revealed that Dorothy does not have a vehicle. In addition, the home is not big enough to support the size of the family and needs many repairs, some of them major. Dorothy had this to say about her situation: “My baby asked me to take care of her babies. I promised her that I would and I just have to fulfill that promise.”
MSF wants to help Dorothy fulfill her promise to April and to see this family remain together after so much tragedy. We are reaching out to you today in hopes you will help us with procuring a van for the family and helping with insurance cost. In the future, we hope to raise enough to eventually build them a new home to give the children the safety and room to grow that they desperately need. We hope you will join in our efforts and share Dorothy’s story with others. Thank you so much for your time and support.
