Good Night Out Vancouver - Granville Street Team

Why Do We Need Your Help?

In April of 2019, the City of Vancouver unanimously approved a motion to look at ways to collaboratively fund Good Night Out Vancouver’s Granville Street Team. This current funding model means that The City of Vancouver and the Downtown Business Improvement Association each generously contribute a third of the total budget, with Good Night Out needing to raise the other third on our own.

Thanks to a grant from the Vancouver Police Foundation, we have been able to stretch the City and DVBIA money much further than we thought while we attempted to find a third funder. Unfortunately, we have not yet found the funds to make up our share.

A lack of funding means that the Street Team Project was faced with the reality of having to stop all operations, halting all of our harm reduction services in their tracks and leaving women and vulnerable populations with decreased feelings of safety and security on their nights out.

We do not want the Street Team to stop. We believe that the Granville Entertainment District (GED) is a vibrant, historical part of the city and that this Project is an effective way for the Vancouver community to come together to revitalize the area. We know that heightened feelings of safety among women and vulnerable populations in the GED increase engagement in the nightlife economy and facilitates a healthy culture of art and entertainment in Vancouver.

In order to get this funding to support GNO initiatives, we will have to raise a portion ourselves and we need your help! All money received will go directly to supporting our Granville Street Team.

About Granville Street Team

Our dedicated team of empathetic and caring leaders hit the streets of Granville (usually travelling in a group of 4) between the hours of 12:00AM and 3:30AM, providing support to everyone - from those who are vulnerable and ask for help, to those who are very intoxicated and unable to advocate for themselves. You may have seen us roam around in pink either helping folks find their friends, charge their phone, get a cab to return home safely, have some water or intervene if we see someone feeling unsafe.

Our role on Granville Street has made a huge impact over the last year and without funding we are unable to continue to provide the support this district's needs. Our stats from last year show that during the summer, especially July, is the busiest time of year for the Granville Entertainment District. Last year alone in the month of July, our Street Team helped over 350 individuals in the GED.

With summer just around the corner, we need your help to secure funds to bring back our team in pink.

About Good Night Out Vancouver

We want to see a cultural shift in Vancouver's arts, culture, and nightlife. We want safer nights out for all.

Good Night Out Vancouver was founded out of an awareness of the links between alcohol consumption and sexual aggression and initiated from community concerns that staff and patrons in Vancouver’s nightlife could benefit from education around how to recognize, interrupt, and prevent sexual harassment and assault on nights out.

We use recent research on gendered violence, bystander intervention, and anti-oppressive techniques to create a variety of original educational tools, interventions and messaging aimed at reducing gendered and homophobic harassment and violence in our city’s arts, culture and entertainment scene. We are committed to engaging our community with these issues in ways that are authentic, meaningful and interactive. The work that Good Night Out has done in Vancouver has been presented on a local and international scale, with our team being looked to as experts in the field of violence against women.

We’re challenging our nighttime economy to create safer nights out for all their customers. We provide specialist training to staff and security, and help to write practical policy for venue to ensure a good night out for all.
