Isabelle Lawson is a 7 year-old tomboy who looks like a princess and loves to play basketball. Earlier this year she found out she had a form of bone cancer, Osteosarcoma. The tumor that she calls an alien egg, and actually named "Poop", resides in her knee. She has since been in a wheelchair and undergone about 10 weeks of chemotherapy. She will soon have a life-changing surgery called a Rotationplasty.
They essentially take her foot off above the ankle, amputate the leg just above the knee, turn the foot backwards so that the ankle acts as a knee joint, making the use of a prosthetic leg much easier and less painful. If all goes well, she follows up with 20 MORE WEEKS OF CHEMOTHERAPY. Twenty.
Parents, Desiree and Derek Lawson, are good, honest, hard-working people raising four kids. Desiree works in a factory and gratefully has insurance. She has had to take an unpaid leave of absence while still paying for medical and life insurance cutting their income nearly in half. Derek is self-employed in sign and lighting service and installation. His work has also slowed down in being there for his daughter and other children. These are sweat and tears, salt of the earth, give the shirt off your back kind of people.
