Just before ascending to heaven, Jesus said"...You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8) Those who have followed this mandate and travelled to other countries have been blessed immeasurably. However not all are called to far off countries. The majority of American believers minister within their own communities.
Through Fruitbelt Famworker Christian Ministry (FFCM) we have the unique opportunity to share Jesus love with people who come to us from many countries - including: Jamaica, Honduras, Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and many others.
Tim Carey (a former FFCM board member) and his wife Anna have participated on a number of mission trips to Honduras. The first time they participated in one of our Friend -A-Camp visits for the first time, they were thrilled to have experienced "a visit to a Third World Country" without leaving their own state.
FFCM has been ministering to the migrant community since 1989. We serve migrant and seasonal farmworkers in northern Maryland as well as in Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, and Perry counties of Pennsylvania. Local congregations collect items
such as blankets, sweatshirts, food, and
toiletries for the mission to distribute to the workers
as they come here to work. A number of Churches and individuals lead Bible Studies and worship services in the farm labor camps. They share meals and play games.
Director Rod Runyan, with FFCM since 1990, and director since 2000, visits workers year-round, offering spiritual counsel and striving to meet pastoral needs.
The workers who come here to harvest the fruit we eat eventually return to their homes taking stories of their time among us here. New worker to the orchards will greet Pastor Rod with men saying, "I know who you are. We always hear of how well the church people of Pennsylvania treat the workers.
As more growers have begun to use the H2A program to hire workers to work in the orchards our "season" has expanded considerably from being primarily 6-8 weeks in September and October. There are now workers coming into our area beginning in January to begin planting flowers, etc., for spring plantings and Mother's Day. Depending on the crop planting and harvest season we have works here in every month of the year. But September ans October still see a preponderance of workers since apples still need to harvested by Hand.
