Mike and John West Education Fund

The Mike and John West Education Fund has been established to help the boys realize their goal of higher education.

Their father Ken’s valiant struggle with Lou Gehrig’s disease ended on Friday, October 31st, 2014 when he died peacefully in the care and love of his family. He was 52. His love lives on.

Kenneth J. West was born on April 24, 1962 in Boston. He was the son of George West and the late Mary (Toland). He was a United States Navy veteran. On Cape Cod, Ken married Nancy Matthews on the most beautiful, yet hottest day on record, July 30, 1994. They chose to reside in Shrewsbury, MA. Ken worked as an engineer for Verizon for 27 years.

Diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," in 2010 it may have paralyzed his body but it never robbed him of his mind, love and ability to keep magic and happiness in their home up until his last day. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7). Ken did just this and more. His life in both good and challenging health was an example for all.

Ken’s world was his family, but especially his boys Michael and John. He was involved in their lives from little league as coach and treasurer and beyond. He got so much joy from watching his boys grow into young men. Whether it was on the ball field/ basketball court or to simple father-son heartfelt moments, his boys were his everything. He cared for them and in his sickness they cared for him with the devotion of saints. His passions and interests included old cars including his own 68’ Cougar. He was a detail guy and hands on. He could fix almost anything electronic from radios to computers and his home served as a place where family and friends would leave behind what they needed fixed.

In heaven Ken joins his mother, Mary.

In life Ken leaves his legacy and love with his wife of 20 years, Nancy; his sons whom he was so proud of, Michael E. and John R. West; his father, George West and his wife, Linda, of Newbury, New Hampshire; his siblings, Robert West of Medford, Peggy MacSwain of Kingston and Kathy West of Richland, Michigan; his in-laws, Catherine Matthews of Shrewsbury, Robert and Sarah Matthews of Shrewsbury, Edward and Peg Matthews of Groton, Mary and Jim Bolger of Princeton, Kathy and Jim Vanar of Laguna Hills, California and Jim Lundy of Holden; many nieces and nephews.
