Gethsemane Lutheran Boiler Fund

$58,990 of $50,000 goal

Update, 12/29
It's been 2 days. Just 24 hours. The blessings keep rolling in.

We've reached and surpassed our goal to help pay for the boiler repairs. Any generous donations that still come in can and will be put to great use.

When we first opened our daycare, we took out a $100,000 loan to bring our space to standards, purchase all the equipment needed, and begin staffing. All the additional donations are going straight to the loan to pay that down.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The generosity of everyone who has helped is truly a blessing.

The Grinch, the Boiler, and the Daycare

Check us out on the WCCO news!

In Dr. Seuss's story, the Grinch nearly stole Christmas from the people of Whoville, but here in Minneapolis, a broken heating system might just steal the blessings of the New Year from children and families of the Camden Neighborhood.

Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church Minneapolis, on 47th and Colfax, is a 125-year-old congregation doing innovative and community-based ministry in North Minneapolis. The church building houses both the non-profit Camden Promise Food Shelf that provides over 50,000 pounds of food to over 4000 people a month and the Camden Kids Daycare that provides quality faith-based learning and care to over 40 children and work for nine staff who live in our neighborhood.

The Camden Kids Daycare opened just over a year ago in order to provide safe and affordable daycare for the neighborhood's children and a way to financially support the food shelf and distributions in one of the largest food deserts in the Twin Cities.

Unfortunately, this holiday season, Gethsemane finds itself face to face with its own Christmas Grinch. With the recent cold snap, the church's nearly 60-year-old boiler and the old pipes that take heat into the daycare have busted and everything needs to be replaced.

Without adequate heating, the daycare will be closed by the Department of Human Services and will go out of business in a matter of weeks as the neighborhood's daycare. And without the daycare, Gethsemane church will be forced to fold, as well as the food shelf and the food ministries.

The church believes strongly in its continued call to provide for its community and has faith in God's ability to provide resources in the generous hearts of others. We are grateful to the Owens company for their help in getting our boiler replaced and their patience as we seek to find a way to pay for it. Gethsemane needs help raising the $50,000 to replace the heating system and adequately heat its facility so it can continue with the vital programming that the Camden Kids and Camden Food Shelf provides for so many families in need.

Please help Gethsemane fight this Grinch, grow your hearts 3 times their size, and save the Camden Kids Daycare!

What a blessing! I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who has donated. Grateful isn't even close to the right word.

One the best parts is that there are people from literally all over the United States supporting our little corner. There was a donation from someone just a few blocks from the church and from someone in Texas. So amazing.

Another great part of this is reading the comments. The words of encouragement, the connections that people have with the church ("I went to Sunday School in that classroom!"), and the faith that people are sharing is simply wonderful.

Our church is so blessed! Thank you to everyone who has been called to support us.
