One year ago I decided to celebrate my 40th Birthday by running my first marathon.
I have two passions - music and running and the perfect city to do the run could only be Chicago! Home to of one of the world’s greatest marathons and the city where Eddie Vedder, vocalist of my beloved band Pearl Jam, used to live.
26 miles...42.2 kilometres...a real challenge for disabled full time, hard working mother of a very special teenager.
I suffer from left-sided Cerebral Palsy and have spent many, many long years of physio trying to gain the best level of fitness in this situation. I have studied at The Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, become a physiotherapist myself and for 12 years I worked as a physio with disabled children in Poland. Six years ago I moved to the UK and currently I am Senior Support Worker for Autistic Young Adults.
In June I went to see my favourite band, Pearl Jam, in London and that is when I was inspired to run for Given To Live hearing Eddie Vedder speak about the work they do from the stage and how two members of Given To Live had walked 160 miles to the London show to raise funds for the work they do.
Given To Live makes going to live music possible for the vulnerable, disadvantaged, disabled and excluded to see their favourite bands and also uses the experience to honour and celebrate people whatever their life situation. Teen cancer, terminal illness, mental health issues, physical disabilities and learning difficulties are just some of the issues that people GTL has taken to shows have presented. Bands seen include Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Stone Sour, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Stereophonics, A7X, Lady Gaga, Pearl Jam and many, many more. Every expense is covered including transport, hotel accommodation, tickets, a poster created specifically for the guest and, of course, their merch.
The average cost of sending one person to see their favourite band and have unforgettable experience is £1200 and I would love to help at least two people get their show.
