Give Suvas More Time

On a seemingly ordinary day in September 2015, Suvas Lobo, a forty-one-year-old father of three, received news that changed his life forever.

He had cancer. Stage 2 Bowel Cancer.

With no family history of the condition, and being of generally good health, to say the diagnosis was a shock is an understatement.

Initially the prognosis was favourable; after six months of chemotherapy, Suvas was given a 75% chance of living beyond five years. Unfortunately, in October 2017, the cancer metastasised into his liver. Three quarters of Suvas’ liver was removed and he underwent another six months of chemotherapy.

The Lobo family was hopeful that the cancer was gone, and this time for good.

Sadly, in October 2018, a routine scan found numerous malignant nodules in Suvas’ lungs.  His oncologist told his family what they had feared the most – the cancer is now ‘not curable’. The tumours are resistant to the only two drugs known to be effective.

Doctors cannot definitively say how long Suvas has left, but he has a few years ahead of him to fight the cancer as strong and as hard as he possibly can.

Suvas is undergoing genetic testing and having the tumours molecularly profiled. Having come to the end of the road of conventional treatments, the results of molecular profiling may offer ‘targeted therapy’; if Suvas’ tumours have certain markers that are similar to other types of cancers, then potentially other types of treatments will be more effective in slowing down the cancer’s progression. The tests will also offer some insight as to how his children’s health may be affected in the future.

These tests are prohibitively expensive (the next test being $35,000), and are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

This page is being managed by fellow colleagues and close friends of Suvas, with all funds going towards these tests and subsequent treatments.

For Suvas, the hardest part of his cancer journey is knowing that he will not be around to watch his two daughters, Sonya (11) and Maya (7), and son Kieran (13) grow up.

We can’t cure Suvas, but we can give him a fighting chance to spend more precious time with his family.

To quote Suvas: “It isn’t how we die that is important, it is how we live.  The time that I have left shouldn’t be measured in days or months or year, but purely in the joy and happiness that I can share with others in that time.”

Please donate what you can, and share this page on social media. Thank you in advance for your support of Suvas and his family – anyone who knows him knows he is truly deserving of your thoughts and generous contribution.
