Give a child the light it needs to learn - for 8$

I have recently come across Waka Waka lights - solar powered LED lamps designed to support the 1.2 billion around the world that live without electricity. It is a smart device that helps to lighten up a household when it matters the most: in the evening when the kids are supposed to do their homework for school.

So on my next trip to Nigeria I had one of these devices with me and shared it with my friend Mo from Ubuntu farms;  they grow and sell organic vegetables and fruit. Mo took it to one of the families around the farms close to Oyan dam, 40 min from Abeokuta. The family loved it but when he returned the next time he realized that the teacher had confiscated the lamp. It didn't feel right that only one child should benefit from the lamp ... they had started to rotate the lamp so that every child would once in a month have a chance to use it.

Here is the plan: we will ship 500 lamps to Lagos and distribute to all the villages in this area. The lamps will be placed at the schools and every day given to pupils so they can do their homework at night. The devices will cost 8$ per piece - this is what it costs to give a child the light it needs to study.
