Ginger Beer is an original production written and directed by upcoming theatre practitioners, Hal Breen and Phoebe Simmonds, through their company: Limerence Productions Ltd.
Limerence Productions is fundraising to take Ginger Beer to the Edinburgh Fringe this coming summer.
The play follows the life of Sammy, a 20-something Bristol gay man and his experiences in the modern gay world. Along the way, we meet his fabulous best friend and part-time drag performer, Gabriel ('El' to his friends). After some awkward sexual encounters, Ginger Beer explores the gritty underside of gay men's lives that perhaps aren't as known as they should be: gay sex saunas, webcam modelling, chemsex (sex under the influence of narcotics). The play makes use of multi-roling and physical theatre.
Limerence Productions believes that theatre can be used to educate and inform, as much as it is an incredible form of entertainment. To that end, we want to create theatre that explores and address the fact that:
-Drug use is seven times higher amongst LGB people than the general population (Source: LGBT Foundation)
-There has been a 147% rise in homophobic hate crimes, since the EU referendum (Source: Galop)
-Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 (Source: Samaritans)
-Men comprise 75% of successful suicides annually (Source: Samaritans)
LGBTQ+ theatre made up less than 2% in the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015 (Source: TimeOut) and we believe that this is something that needs to change.
The money raised will be put towards funding the productions, specifically helping with venue hire as well as various production elements in the show - costume, props, etc.
Co-writer Hal Breen is himself a gay man and feels that there is a great need to create theatre that addresses and LGBTQ+ audience, to bring to light the difficulties that non-heterosexual people face on a daily basis.
Phoebe Simmonds is a passionate advocate of LGBTQ+ rights and feels that the lack of awareness in the general public about the issues facing the gay community needs to be addressed.
We would be enormously grateful for any and all donations. Theatre is our passion and we love nothing more than creating performance art with our friends and colleagues.
