We have set up this GoFundMe page for our friend Gina. Gina is a wife to Luli and a mom to Jeffrey and a wonderful friend to those of us fortunate enough to know her. Gina is from Albania and came to America in 2001, with her husband and young son in search of a better life for her family.
Gina’s mom passed away 2 years ago from kidney failure due to CDK, Chronic Kidney Disease. Gina found out 4 years ago that she inherited this disease - a diagnosis that requires an inevitable kidney transplant. She’s had her kidney function monitored every 2 months since diagnosis and now lives with her kidney’s functioning at 10%, which puts the need for a transplant at a critical level, as she is at end-stage renal disease. Living with kidney’s that function at a steadily declining level, has a tremendous impact on her quality of life. Once energetic and full of life, Gina now has very low levels of energy and fights to put on a brave face and function each day, including going to work every day, being a wife to Luli and mom Jeffrey, who is now a college student.
There are a number of complications from the Chronic Kidney Disease, one of which is Anemia. There is a treatment that helps one live with Anemia called Procrit, but these shots cost Gina $500 out of pocket every week and she cannot afford to get them. She has to live without this treatment.
The amazing part of this story is that Luli, her husband of 25 years, found out that he is a match to be her lifesaving kidney donor. He still has some additional tests that need to be completed but we are all hoping and praying that they confirm he is able to be the donor and early next year they will do the transplant operation.
Throughout this ordeal, Gina remains the strong, positive, amazing woman that she is. However, the medical bills have been piling up over the past 4 years now and they struggle to make minimum payments on these bills each month. Gina is fortunate to have health insurance but with a high deductible plan with an out of pocket maximum cost of $10,000, past bills still due, and God willing future medical costs related to the transplant and medications that will be needed for the rest of her life, we are praying and asking for help from those people fortunate enough to be able to, generous enough of spirit and love to want to, help this amazing woman live her best life.
