"My parents said if I didn’t get an abortion, I would have to move out.”

“The father of my unborn baby just kicked me out of his apartment and I don’t know where to go from here.”

“My daughter’s 14 year old friend just found out she’s pregnant and her mother has ordered her out of her house by the weekend.”

These are actual comments that are received much too often from people calling Gianna House.

Pregnancy is a challenging life event for teens who find themselves homeless, without resources and without love and support necessary for a healthy pregnancy and birth.

A few years ago, our sister recognized the need for a young teen pregnancy center. Not just a center, but a residence the girls could call home while pregnant, birthing, and residing for up to one full year after giving birth. They would have a home where they would be loved, supported, and educated.  Yes, surprisingly, there are still many girls under the age of 18 years, some not even teenagers yet (think 12 and under), in our communities who find themselves with nowhere to go and no means of support for themselves or their unborn children. In Detroit alone there were 2,863 babies born to teens in 2013. Unfortunately, these statistics do not capture the number of teens who believed they had no choice but to abort their pregnancies. Sr. Diane's passion has become her mission. She has managed to establish Gianna House in Eastpointe at the former convent of St. Veronica Parish.

Establishing a non-profit mirrors starting a company, with one major difference:  banks or financial institutions do not provide seed money. Consequently, Sr. Diane has reached out to family, friends and strangers alike and raised money, secured a location, is bringing the building up to code, rallied an army of volunteers, and has contacted numerous individual and organizations who continue to donate diapers, baby and mom clothes, toys, furniture, etc. Sr. Diane Masson CSSF, Executive Director, and Sr. Theresa Maynard OP, Associate Director, are reaching the hearts of a variety of healthcare professionals and educators who are excited to assist these young mothers to become contributing members of the Gianna House family, to earn their high school diploma or GED, to learn how to care for themselves and their newborns, and to understand the importance of good nutrition and proper hygiene.

Despite all of their tireless efforts, Gianna House (which is a 501 ( c ) 3 non-profit organization), still needs over $200,000 to meet the strict State of Michigan building codes before the Gianna House doors can be opened to welcome residents.

With the recent additions to our own families, it is unimaginable to think of our daughters being pregnant with nowhere to turn. This Christmas season has motivated us to ask everyone we can reach through social media to help with a donation of any amount and an additional plea to extend this to anyone you know.

Every penny gets us one step closer to making a difference in a pregnant teen’s life. The need is REAL!

In this special time of giving, please consider Gianna House. Be assured that every amount received will go to the care of these young mothers and their babies so we can continue to hear comments such as, ”My baby was born on 7-25-15 and thanks to the care and concern of the founders and staff of Gianna House I wasn’t alone!"

Please visit the Gianna House website at giannahouse.org for further information.

Blessings to you and your families in 2017.
