On May 12, 2010 York Correctional Institution became the home for Monique as she was sentenced to serve a 12 month term after being found guilty by a Hartford Judge. While incarcerated she was employed and working in food prep for $1.75 a day earning $18.00 every two weeks to survive. Monique's roommate Lisa encouraged her to read the Bible and Monique came across a simple but powerful scripture that says "BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD" and it encouraged her to be still and wait for good things to come. At the time of her incarceration she had 2 children, ages 10 months and 8 years old. Monique knew she had to change. She wrote her public defender and prayed to GOD pleading for a chance have a fresh start and be with her children. 6 months later Monique she received a call from her public defender saying there was program available called "Fresh Start" which was an alternative to serving time in prison. On November 4 she was released from York and began a new beginning at the place that inspired her to pursue her dream of opening a center for young women. Inspired Girls Club INC is a 501c3 social club for girls. There are so many young women who deal with trials and tribulations of life and make mistakes because they have no where to go. The theory of a youth safe space is crucial to tackling the common youth problems that girls face today which are usually related to: Self-Esteem, Stress, Bullying, Depression, Peer-Pressure and Competition. Inspired Girls Club gives youth a space to generate strategies through the form of art such as design, crafts, poetry and dance. Our vision is to be a symbol of hope for youth and empower them to create their own individual dynamic life plan, and support them in achieving their goals. We encourage them to inspire positive change, leadership, character development and pursue their dreams all while gaining self-confidence, self-advocacy skills, boosting self-esteem and building their inner strength. Inspired Girls Club is the place where girls near and far can come and be free! Monique has since purchased a building located at 152 Francis Ave. Hartford, Ct to help young women and is need of monetary donations for renovations!!!
