Hello beautiful beans.
I am trying to raise money to get to VONA: Voices of our Nation - a workshop exclusively for writers of color taking place this year at the University of Miami. VONA is committed to artistic excellence, social justice & empowering the community of writers of color. You can learn more about this dope organization here: I’m so so excited to have been accepted into this program & couldn't be more excited to get to be apart of it.
Why I Need Funding:
My goal as apart of this workshop is to complete a manuscript of poems about my mother’s life as an aesthetician. It would explore Latinx & American beauty standards. It’s really hard to find space & time to efficiently complete this kind of work & I think VONA is perfect space for this to bloom & hopefully capture someone’s nose in the public garden of poetry. I promise I come up with better metaphors than that usually. I think.
The total cost of tuition is $1300. This would cover the workshop & room & board. Right now I am not in a place in my life where I can fully afford this opportunity. I am hoping to contribute as much as I can aside from fundraising. My goal is to raise as much as I can by the end of May 2016.
With my writing, I hope to capture the feeling my parents get when they meet someone from their home country & the feeling I get when I’m late to a party. As in, I don’t know you, but it feels good to see you. As in I hope it isn’t too late, I hope you’re still here, & I hope we we still get to talk.
