On March 28, 2018, Lyman Burk suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke in his home on Vashon island.  He was alone and paralyzed on the floor for four days before he was found, dehydrated and unconscious.  Only Lyman‘s will to live, and a miracle,  kept him alive.

He was rushed to the hospital where he is periodically awake and aware,  but remains on life-support.  He has complete right side paralysis, and is unable to speak but recognizes his family and friends.  Every day he is gradually making very slow progress, but there is hope.

Lyman has catastrophic medical insurance  for catastrophic illness or accident, so he is being well cared for in the neuro ICU.

However,  his insurance only covers 30 days of in-patient rehabilitation.  He is facing extensive long-term rehabilitation and the outcome for whether he will be able to ever live independently is uncertain.  The quality of the rehab will certainly be a factor in his recovery.

Lyman is one  of the most interesting, articulate, and brilliant people on the planet. The dozens of people crowding to see him in the ICU is testimony to his effect on people.  Please send love and prayers that his brain heals enough for him to move on to rehabilitation. The world needs his light and we certainly haven't had enough of  his incredible presence.

Lyman is one of the most giving and generous people we all know. He has never turned away someone in need and has always supported the underdog. We need to help Lyman in his time of need.  If you can do so, please donate to defray the cost of the rehabilitation and medical care he will need.

From Kathleen: Lyman is in a rehab center and really making progress with his mobility! As Garnet says, he is "being a bit of a gremlin." He is able to sit in a wheelchair now, and can take some steps with an aid on both side of him. There has not been a lot of progress with the aphasia (inability to speak) and that remains heartbreaking. Lyman is receiving OT, PT and speech therapy and we've been told he needs at least 6 months of continuous therapy to maximize his recovery. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to his fund, sent love and good vibes, and who continuously send offers to help. Garnet and David are both taking time away from their lives in California to be in WA with Lyman and help him along.

From Kathleen: Lyman discovered today that his uninjured right brain remembers guitar chords. What a beautiful thing! He cannot strum but David did that for him. We predict that music will play a huge part in Lyman's recovery and hope he is moved to rehab facility very soon. We are just waiting for a bed and insurance approval. Lyman has a lot of hard work ahead of him and we very much appreciate your support, love and kindness. David and Garnet remain by his side and continue to ask that no one visit as Lyman is fragile and needs quiet space <3

From Kathleen: Thank you everyone for your amazing support! It has been an intense week. We are awaiting insurance approval for Lyman to move to an inpatient rehabilitation center - the sooner the better. He is unable to speak (but can say "yes" and "no"), is paralyzed on his right side, and has a lot of damage to his left brain. Still, there is beauty and hope. Last night Garnet brought him a cherry blossom from outside and he marveled at it, looking at it from all directions, and then brought it to his nose to smell! Lyman the scientist is in there! I looked up the Genus of the blossom and was surprised to find out it is actually a rose and he just gave me a "duh" look. He knew, of course :)

We know that so many of you are eager to see Lyman and want you to know that only Garnet and David have regular access. Lyman is easily overwhelmed and needs a quiet, low stimulation environment. He is also frustrated by his inability to communicate. There will no doubt be plenty of opportunities to visit as he regains strength and skills.

Please continue to do whatever it is you've been doing to help his miracle along <3 Thank you!

Dear Friends of Lyman: Garnet and David send their appreciation for all of your good vibes, thoughts, prayers and love. They are with him 24/7 in the Neuro ICU and he is not able to have any visitors outside of immediate family. The nurses have asked that folks stop calling for information (but, but, so many people love Lyman!) Lyman's brain injury is very serious and he has a long road ahead of him.
