On March 28, 2018, Lyman Burk suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke in his home on Vashon island.  He was alone and paralyzed on the floor for four days before he was found, dehydrated and unconscious.  Only Lyman‘s will to live, and a miracle,  kept him alive.

He was rushed to the hospital where he is periodically awake and aware,  but remains on life-support.  He has complete right side paralysis, and is unable to speak but recognizes his family and friends.  Every day he is gradually making very slow progress, but there is hope.

Lyman has catastrophic medical insurance  for catastrophic illness or accident, so he is being well cared for in the neuro ICU.

However,  his insurance only covers 30 days of in-patient rehabilitation.  He is facing extensive long-term rehabilitation and the outcome for whether he will be able to ever live independently is uncertain.  The quality of the rehab will certainly be a factor in his recovery.

Lyman is one  of the most interesting, articulate, and brilliant people on the planet. The dozens of people crowding to see him in the ICU is testimony to his effect on people.  Please send love and prayers that his brain heals enough for him to move on to rehabilitation. The world needs his light and we certainly haven't had enough of  his incredible presence.

Lyman is one of the most giving and generous people we all know. He has never turned away someone in need and has always supported the underdog. We need to help Lyman in his time of need.  If you can do so, please donate to defray the cost of the rehabilitation and medical care he will need.

From Kathleen:

Hi Friends...Lyman has finally settled in after 3+ weeks home. The first 10 days were very difficult as he had an infection that had him at the doctor or with the visiting nurse almost every day. He is settling into a routine and we are all figuring out how best to care for him and still care for ourselves. Here are a few photos. Lyman is learning to fold his laundry, start a fire, and play piano with one arm, and is receiving daily PT, OT and/or speech therapy. His brain is still in recovery mode and he sleeps a lot, but definitely finds joy every day, despite his challenges.

Dear Friends:

We cannot thank you enough for the continued support, food, goodies, help and ongoing concern. We are on a steep learning curve for Lyman's care and recovery. His days are mixed, as expected, but he has many joys, including the hummingbirds that are flocking to the feeders we have set up, and of course, his children who remain by his side 24/7.

We are discovering who the post-stroke Lyman is, and appreciate that so many folks want to visit. Very slowly he is able to indicate that he is ready for a few quick visits here and there. We encourage everyone to read about aphasia and apraxia so that you can better communicate with Lyman when he is ready for a visit <3

Thank you!

From Kathleen: Lyman is in a rehab center and really making progress with his mobility! As Garnet says, he is "being a bit of a gremlin." He is able to sit in a wheelchair now, and can take some steps with an aid on both side of him. There has not been a lot of progress with the aphasia (inability to speak) and that remains heartbreaking. Lyman is receiving OT, PT and speech therapy and we've been told he needs at least 6 months of continuous therapy to maximize his recovery. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to his fund, sent love and good vibes, and who continuously send offers to help. Garnet and David are both taking time away from their lives in California to be in WA with Lyman and help him along.

From Kathleen: Lyman discovered today that his uninjured right brain remembers guitar chords. What a beautiful thing! He cannot strum but David did that for him. We predict that music will play a huge part in Lyman's recovery and hope he is moved to rehab facility very soon. We are just waiting for a bed and insurance approval. Lyman has a lot of hard work ahead of him and we very much appreciate your support, love and kindness. David and Garnet remain by his side and continue to ask that no one visit as Lyman is fragile and needs quiet space <3
