Help SPA get Filters to Puerto Rico

$4,603 of $4,000 goal

Raised by 36 people in 6 months
When Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on September 20th, 2017, the water, transport, energy, healthcare, and telecommunications infrastructure was stripped away from more than 3 million people. Almost immediately, clean water became a scarce commodity on the island. First responders and aid organizations responded by bringing supplies, including bottled water, to the port of San Juan. Unfortunately, not much of the essential supplies reached inland, resulting in people resorting to drinking from contaminated water sources.

With the 4,000 dollars we raise, Sustainability Projects Abroad (SPA) will be able to purchase 100 Hollow Fiber Membrane water filters, provided by Filter of Hope. The aftermath of the hurricane on Puerto Rico has taken more than 900 American lives in less than two months. The risk of an island-wide water-borne illness outbreak is imminent if unchecked. Our aim is to mitigate the disaster Hurricane Maria has caused, and bring relief to Puerto Rico.

On January 2nd to 14th 2018, SPA will be on the ground in Puerto Rico partnering with local community leaders and aid workers to survey water quality, train locals on how to use Hollow Fiber Membrane water filters, and employ LiveWaterMaps , an online website for crowdsourcing and mapping water quality for anyone, anywhere, anytime. SPA is sending a team consisting of Nicolas Duenas, Ricardo Valdes, Natalia Dilan, Hector Carrasquillo, Leah Leshchinsky, and Bryan Chua.

If you want to get involved or know contacts in Puerto Rico we can partner with, please feel free to contact us at spaumass@gmail.com

On Monday, Hector Carrasquillo, Ricardo Valdes, and Natalia Valdes, Nicolas Duenas, and Bryan Chua met up to plan the trip specifics and logistical details of our trip this January 2nd to 14th. We have all bought tickets and are committed to bringing clean water back to Puerto Rico.

Attached is a map that details a rough outline of the trip, still subject to change depending on the situation on the ground and depending on who gets in touch with us. We have established contact with professors at the University of Puerto Rico and other local community leaders in the areas we shall be visiting. If you know anyone who we can partner with, let us know through sending an email to spaumass@gmail.com

Sustainability Projects Abroad is holding an Open Mic fundraiser at the basement of Brett Hall on December 6th, 5-7pm. Light refreshments shall be provided. If you are interested in attending or performing, send an email to spaumass@gmail.com. There is a suggested donation of $15.

Thank you so much for the donations so far! We have achieved around 25% of our goal!

What does Thanksgiving have to do with Puerto Rico?

400 years ago, in a rare act of cross-cultural kindness, Native Americans showed the Pilgrims unconditional love by sharing their food and resources at a time of great need. Today, we have that same opportunity to pay forward what we have been given to our fellow American sisters and brothers suffering without clean water in Puerto Rico.

What does Thanksgiving have to do with Puerto Rico? Feel free to share this GoFundMe link with your family and friends on social media or even around the dinner table as we give thanks for what we have this Thanksgiving season!

A SPA Team member, Nicolas Duenas is in Puerto Rico right now and he has been livestreaming what he is seeing on the ground.

"They've been rebuilding first the highways and electricity lines. My [Puerto Rican] friend Jesus was telling me that this whole road just looked like an ocean, just like a huge river."
