Get There on Our Own Steam

Donation protected
We’re biking more than 360 miles to the People’s Climate March to embody our belief in the necessity to move beyond fossil fuels. We need your support to make our trip possible.

Who are we?
We are an intergenerational group (ranging from ages 21-75) of climate activists from Western Massachusetts. We are students, pastors, carpenters, educators, scientists, artists, photographers, parents, consultants, and climate justice organizers. We are Andrea Ayvazian, Peter Ives, Dan Cottle, Ed Lennihan, Alex Risley Schroeder, John Risley, Sara Weinberger, Kathy O’Connor, Chia Collins, Dineen O'Rourke, and Tom Crowe. We call ourselves Get There on Our Own Steam.

What exactly are we doing?
We will leave on April 21st from Northampton, Massachusetts and will bike over 360 miles on the East Coast Greenway to our nation's capital. We will arrive in DC on April 28th, just in time for some of our group to attend the People’s Climate March Youth Convening. The following day, we will all march in the People's Climate March, hand in hand, and sing out for climate justice making sure that our voices are heard in every crevice of the White House.

Along the journey, we will stay at churches, hotels, and people's homes. We are traveling slowly so we can engage with and learn from the communities we bike through. We will be leading discussions about the growing movements for climate justice, sharing stories of resistance, and encouraging those we meet to join us at the March.

Why are we doing this?
We are all fundamentally motivated by a deep love for this planet and its people. We want to do everything in our capacity to protect it for this generation and the next. The People's Climate March has surfaced as a critical moment to come together and stand up for our deepest beliefs. It's our stage to show that despite recent incessant environmental deregulations and injustices, we will not back down until we live in an economy that supports all of us – one that does not rely on fossil fuels, but instead, transitions to renewable forms of energy and transportation led by and for local communities.

Why are we going? In each of our words:
To spread messages of hope, resistance, and kindness to those we meet along the way.

Because 2016 was the hottest year on record.

Because our bodies are a tremendous source of power and possibility.

Because the current administration doesn't believe in the existence of climate change.

Because of the possibility that responding and adapting to climate change contains for all of us in our work, our communities, and our lives.

For all of you, and your children and grandchildren.

Can you help fund our ride?
We are raising funds to pay for our support van, a few nights of lodging along the way, food, and biking safety supplies. Any contribution will make a difference. We are so grateful. Can’t bike to DC? Can't attend the March? Be there in spirit through a small donation, or help spread the word by sharing this fundraiser!  All extra funds that we raise will support building the climate justice movement in our local community.

Thank you. Let’s ride together towards a future free of fossil fuels. See you on the streets!
