Who Am I?
Ahoj! My name is Sydney Thompson & I am a rising senior at Binghamton University majoring in Comparative Literature and minoring in Global Studies. I am from Laurelton, Queens and I come from an Afro-Caribbean family. I love to travel, and I am passionate about sustainability and conservation efforts. This past spring semester I was accepted into my university’s study abroad program for the Fall 2019 semester and I chose to study in Prague, Czech Republic. I will be studying at Anglo-American University, one of the oldest universities in Prague and I am extremely excited! I chose to study in Prague due to its central location in Europe – Prague’s location would allow me to travel to numerous cities, which in turn would allow me to expand my horizons and get out of my comfort zone. I believe that there is power in getting out of one’s comfort zone, for the ability to adapt to situations as they come is a needed life-skill.
As a Comparative Literature major, my degree is an interdisciplinary program that studies how literature interacts with cultural movements, political dynamics, and international relations. I study how people record their lives through literature – how tone, diction, and stylistic devices can bring history to life. By participating in the Czech Republic program, I plan to explore classes that are internationally focused; through these classes I hope to combine my major and minor seamlessly for an overall well-rounded, fulfilling, and most of all, global education. There is power within a global education, for it allows you to reach and connect to those who you never thought you could.
I am raising money to cover the costs of my study abroad program;
The Costs
The money raised would not only cover the program fee, which includes tuition and fees and housing, but would too cover the following costs:
Immigration Requirements (Visa, Entry & Exit Fees)
Books, Materials and Supplies
Meals (I am expected to buy my own groceries while abroad)
International Airfare
Why do I want to study abroad?
As it pertains to my minor, I am required to study abroad during my time in university. I am looking forward to my study abroad experience because growing up in the American education system, I have come across the ideology that exists among Americans, one in which there is the “West,” and then “The Rest.” I would like to prove this ideology wrong by exploring other countries and establishing global literacy and understanding, beginning with the Czech Republic. This trip will be my first time in Europe, and I am beyond thrilled for the life-changing experience that is to come with studying abroad. This trip is very important to me because I hope that my sense of self would come to fruition while I am abroad; I hope this experience will fulfill me in multiple ways – emotionally, psychologically, academically, and culturally. I have received a partial scholarship toward the costs of my program, but I am hoping that through this medium, I can raise additional funds to cover the entire program.
