Get Micah Back on His Feet

Donation protected
Micah, as some of you may know, was my driver/fixer/security/all-around guardian during my time in Lagos, Nigeria. He's an absolute stand-up guy whose ability to maneuver through Lagos traffic is unparalleled, and who regularly put in 14 hour days chauffeuring others around Lagos and then helping out his family, who he also financially supports. In his free time, Micah has been trying to learn German by watching Youtube videos and, against all odds, is a big fan of country music. He's been a loyal friend since I first met him in Lagos in 2015, checking in on my family, asking for my opinion about political developments in the US, and rarely expressing any frustration with the many challenges of his life.

Exactly one month ago, on November 11th, Micah was driving three passengers down a main motorway in Lagos when a large truck had a brake failure and came barreling into his lane. To avoid a head-on collision, Micah swerved his car and went over the dividing barricade, flipping his vehicle and ending up with a face full of glass and a number of other injuries. The other three passengers were miraculously not hurt. He spent two weeks in the hospital and is now back at home, but his car -- which is his primary source of income -- is an absolute wreck (see the photos). Micah is now trying to find small jobs in order to begin earning back the money he'll need to salvage the vehicle and get back to driving, but this will take him many, many months. He estimates that he needs around 750 Euro to repair the car, but he'll be losing income every day he does not work. I'm therefore raising money to pay for his car repairs, hospital bills, replace his cell phone, and to help make up for lost income in this time.

I know it's December and everyone is likely beginning to feel some charitable giving fatigue, but what is, for many of us, ultimately a small amount of money could really put Micah's already difficult life back on track. I can vouch for him many times over; without him, I wouldn't have lasted a week in Lagos. He's just been dealt some really unfair cards. If you're moved to do so, I would be very appreciative for any sized donation (really, even $2 helps), and of course, all funds will be passed directly on to him. This campaign was my idea, but he gave me his permission to run it.
