General Vanier Inclusive Playground

When we enrolled our daughter at General Vanier School we immediately noticed the poor conditions of the existing play structure. As educators ourselves who believe strongly in inclusive education and it became our mission to help raise the funds necessary to update the playground so that it can become a place that is accessible to ALL children; including children with exceptional physical, intellectual, sensory and behavior needs.
Backed by our School, Community, and Parent Council we intend to make it a place where all children can make connections, use their imaginations, and physically challenge themselves.
What are we communicating to children when the peers that they have been sitting beside in their classrooms have the same access to learning, but not to play?
This province is doing a fair job of making classrooms truly inclusive for all learners. Now it is time to match those messages outside the school walls as well.
Through discussions with Parent Advisory Councils who have completed projects similar to the one we are envisioning, we project that the estimated costs of this project will be between $80 000.00 and $150 000.00 and expect fundraising efforts to take anywhere from 3 to 5 years. The PAC at General Vanier plans to meet these goals by writing grant proposals to numerous organizations and to plan fundraising events over and above the current projects already in place.
Many of the grants we will be pursuing require a minimum amount of money already raised in order to be considered. This GoFundMe page is one of many efforts to raise enough money to move forth with our traditional fund raising and grant writing to arrive at our goal.
