Joshua W. Sill was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1831. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York where he graduated third in his class. He had a distinguished military and civilian career and was a college professor at the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumpter. He rejoined the U.S. Army and was commissioned Colonel of the 33rd Ohio volunteer Infantry in 1861. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General and was commanding a Brigade in General Sheridan’s Division. During the second day of the Battle of Stone’s River outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee he was killed by rifle fire while leading his men forward. His friend and West Point classmate, General Phillip Sheridan, had Fort Sill, Oklahoma named for him after the war.

His body was eventually brought to Chillicothe and buried in Grandview Cemetery and an impressive Monument of Vermont White Marble, Ohio Limestone, and bronze was erected there in his honor. In 1957 a Bronze Plaque was donated by the officers and men of Fort Sill and added to the monument. Unfortunately, over the roughly 150 years since the Civil War time and weather have significantly deteriorated the monument.

Many men from the Ross County area served in the Union Army with distinction during the Civil War and two have significant monuments in Chillicothe. SGT Enderlin was awarded the Medal of Honor at Gettysburg and has a statue at the entrance to Yoctangee Park.  The Sons of Union Veterans, Enderlin Encampment, have instituted a project to restore BG Sill’s impressive monument in Grandview Cemetery to the condition that it was in when it was erected to include the bronze plaque from the soldiers of Fort Sill.

This project will require $32,000 and 6 to 8 months. We are asking for donations to the Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation (General Sill Monument Fund) and would like for you to contribute to the restoration of this once impressive monument that honors a son of Chillicothe who fell on the battlefield during the Civil War. The Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation is a publicly supported tax-exempt corporation under Section 501(c) (3) and under section 509(a) (3), all gifts are tax deductible.
