About the Medical Mission

The Gbm Foundation for epilepsy and mental wellbeing is organizing a an enlarged medical mission to its pilot area of the Lebialem division in the SW Region of Cameroon from the 21-23 of April 2017. The misssion is led by the CNN Hero Dr Georges Bwelle and his team of specialists : Kindly Check out the press release by our Board Chairman  Chief Charles Taku for details of the noble mission ...

About the Foundation

The Gbm Foundation for Epilepsy and Mental Wellbeing was founded in September 2014 by Mrs. Bibiana Taku, in memory of her son, Gabriel Bebonbechem who lived and died at the prime age of 33, after having spent 18 years living with epilepsy and eventually a mental illness. He was full of talents and potential, but his dreams, hopes and aspirations, were brought to a halt by his medical and stigmatized condition. In the words of his sister, he was a genius who ended up a simpleton, and she shares salient aspects of his perilous journey in the memoir published after his demise.

Being one of the pioneer of such outreach and advocacy initiatives operating in the geographical region of Cameroon in Africa, the Gbm Foundation for Epilepsy and Mental Wellbeing seeks to contribute towards the achievement of Gabriel Bebonbechem's dream posthumously, as well as contribute towards the fight against all forms of stigma, rejection and abuses of persons living with epilepsy and mental illness.

The foundation has led successful sensitization campaigns on epilepsy using the print media, community radios in English, pidgin and local languages, and the national radio. A massively attended walk to bring epilepsy out of the shadows was equally organized in October 2015. These projects have been successfully carried out in collaboration with schools, churches, government health and social services, and traditional rulers in its pilot project area of Fontem in the South West Region, and other parts of the Country like Buea, Douala and Yaounde.

The Foundation thereby seeks to contribute to research on epilepsy, and join the fight against the taboo, stigmatization, unawareness, rejection and outright abuse of persons suffering from epilepsy and the mentally challenged in our society, guided by empathy, respect, inclusiveness and justice for the vulnerable and persons with disabilities.

Target Beneficiaries of the Medical Mission

Our Target beneficiaries range from Children to old people, and as many as 1000 people are expected. The Lebialem division in the South West Region of Cameroon, has one of the highest rates of prevalence of epilepsy in Country. Cameroon on its part, also turns out to have one of the highest rates of epilepsy prevalence in the world according a lancet neurology article. The article states the following:

About Epilepsy in Cameroon

"Epilepsy is a chronic non – communicable (non-contagious) neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, at least two unprovoked seizures occurring in a period of more than 24 hours.

“The prevalence of epilepsy in Cameroon might be the highest in the world. Figures of between 4•9% and 6% are commonly quoted, although values of over 10% have been reported..."

Call for Donations

Funds are needed to organize a successful mission led by a medical team of over 30 specialists. Funds will equally help pay for all the consultations, EEGs, other examinations and minor surgeries as the case may be. In addition to this, medications are direly needed for a population barely able to afford a decent livelihood. The Neurologist we collaborate with has given us a list of medication you can see below:

We have equally gotten a profoma invoice from the pharmacy. The medications alone will cost close to 2500 euros for a target beneficiary of 1000 people over a 3 month treatment protocol span; in a country with no social insurance.

We are therefore reverting to crowd sourcing, appealing to donors with all our heart to help make this medical mission a sucessful and sustainable undertaking. The earlier we get funds, the better.

Epilepsy is more than seizures, let's all get involved to bring it out of the shadows. No donation is too small.

In my capacity as chairman of the board, and on behalf of all our team, I want to sincerely thank you for your donation.
