Help Charmaine Fight ALS!

Donation protected
It is with great sadness to hear that one of our dedicated volunteer facilitators at The Gatehouse, Charmaine Loverin has been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, or motor neuron disease).  The ALS Society of Canada notes that this is a disease that gradually paralyzes people because the brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles of the body that we are typically able to move at will. Over time, as the muscles of the body break down, someone living with ALS will lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow, and eventually breathe.

Charmaine has been a committed volunteer to The Gatehouse for over the past 7+ years.  I am collecting cash donations that will be given to Charmaine for whatever purpose she deems useful at this time in her life. My goal is to raise $10,000.

Since July 2012, Charmaine has been volunteering as a peer support group facilitator at The Gatehouse, www.thegatehouse.org, in both our group and one on one peer support programs for survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Charmaine exudes empathy, compassion, and determination in helping abuse survivors reclaim their voices allowing them to move from isolation to inclusion.  She is well-liked and respected by her peers and is often sought for guidance.

Charmaine is a community leader and dynamic advocate for children, youth, and families impacted by childhood sexual abuse. She led a public petition in collaboration with up to 2000 signatures of support from the community, mental health workers and organizations, students and educators she tabled and was formally introduced to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on one vision; to create a law that all Ontario Schools implement an Annual Awareness Week for Abuse Prevention

Charmaine has had a positive influence on the lives of those she has provided support to. She goes above and beyond to help survivors of childhood sexual abuse, who are often struggling with addictions, mental health, and suicidal ideation. She works diligently as an advocate in the community to raise awareness about the devastating impact of childhood sexual abuse.

Charmaine has also volunteered her time as a guest speaker at various post-secondary awareness events to educate students on the impact of childhood sexual abuse. Often students reach out to her post lectures to also contribute their time to help raise awareness. For example, York University students helped gather petition signatures and educate the public.

She has literally saved lives with her efforts. Charmaine is compassionate and determined in her community work supporting children, youth and families in healing from childhood sexual abuse. In addition to all the volunteer hours, public speaking engagements and awareness she is a part of, she started her own agency Centre for Mental Health Transformation to further educate the public.  She works determinedly in raising awareness about the devastating impact of childhood sexual abuse in addition to facilitating suicide prevention, bullying and other workshops in the community. One of the major goals that she continues to work on includes building and advocating for a legislative framework in our school systems to educate and protect children and families from harm.
