Garrett’s EOL Doula & Story Studio Training

Donation protected
Garrett Drew Ellis spent many years working as a freelance writer, working on projects that were not always meaningful to him. Now, after much prayer and patience, he is getting ready to step out into a field of work that he feels deeply called to. This calling was part of the motivation for him becoming a writer at the tender age of 7 years old.

“No one should pass away alone. None of us should leave this existence not having shared our story. No family or community should suffer from not knowing the life stories of their loved ones. This is the reason I write.” -Garrett Drew Ellis

Storytelling. End of Life. Writing for the terminally ill and for families/individuals who are losing or have lost loved ones. This has become Garrett’s direction as a writer. He not only knows the pain of grief from the loss of his mother in his youth, but also the pain from so much of her story being untold and forgotten. He has a deep desire to do what he can to support others in this very special way.

And he needs your help. This year, Garrett will be starting a new business, the “LifeWrite Story Studio LLC”. The Story Studio will be a writing and end of life doula service, supporting individuals in hospice and with terminal diagnoses. Not only will Garrett be of service as individuals transition from this life to the next through doula and personal care work but will grant people the opportunity to share, write or record their life’s story, both for their personal healing as well as for that of their loved ones. The goal is to eventually have both a mobile and in studio space. Sitting vigil, personal care and story interviewing will be part of the services provided and recordings will be in written or audio format, either published or unpublished. In addition to this important work, the Story Studio will publish memoirs and resources to help the general public write and record their own stories.

Here is where you can help. On May 3-5th, 2019, Garrett will be attending training to become a certified End-of-Life Doula in Rockville, Maryland with INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association). He will also be launching his website and mobile service in the weeks following. He is raising a total of $1000 to accomplish these tasks. Your support of any amount would contribute to the cost of his training and travel in Maryland as well as help with state application fees and costs. The deadline for Garrett to register for this training is mid-April.

If you believe in Garrett, in the work of therapeutic storytelling and in the work of supporting individuals through End of Life transitions, please consider donating today. The name of every individual who contributes will be placed on a plaque in the physical Story Studio space, naming them as a founding supporter of this work.A new website and Facebook page for this work will be launching on May 6th, 2019.
