Opportunities for Youth Guatemala
Donation protected
Young people living in poverty in Guatemala face many challenges regarding health, education and employment. There are programs in place addressing such needs, but due to a critical lack of resources, there are gaps in existing services. As under-served children reach adolescence, their opportunities diminish. We hope to bridge some of those gaps so that disadvantaged youth will have the opportunity to earn a living wage with the education and skills they have developed, and in turn will be able to support their families and contribute to their communities in a positive way.
The Garden of Hope is a community garden, free and available to children, families, and schools, many of which don’t have regular access to a green outdoor space. It’s a working garden, which produces nutritious food, all of which is consumed by the community. It’s also an educational center where kids explore and learn about how to grow food and the importance of caring for the earth and each other. Each month, Garden of Hope hosts over 300 people in it's space and provides gardening services for over 400 students in surrounding communities.
The Job Connections Program will take place at the Garden of Hope learning center and will provide life skills training to youth who have graduated high school, but who are not college bound. After the completion of a one to three month training, individuals will be connected to long term job opportunities within a community network of local business. Entrepreneurial opportunities are also an option for young people who have the desire and capability.
We are currently seeking supporters to help us make this much needed program a reality. Costs for 1 year will include hiring a Teacher/Coordinator ($7,000), providing interpretation for deaf participants ($3,000), stipends and materials ($3,000.)
