Based in Vancouver, BC, Elephanatics was formed in May 2013. We are the only elephant advocacy organization in British Columbia, Canada. Our mission is to help the long-term survival of African elephants by raising awareness and disseminating information about their ecology and conservation in the face of the recent resurgence of continental-wide ivory poaching in Africa. Rangers on the front lines of the elephant ivory war are risking their lives daily to protect Africa's remaining elephants and are the true heroes of this ongoing war. The horrors of the senseless slaughter of elephants for their tusks is hugely magnified by the tragedy of rangers and conservationists losing their lives in the act of trying to protect one of Africa's most important natural heritages.
In October this year, a 10-person African Parks led ranger patrol team were engaged in a gun fight with poachers operating within Garamba Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo - one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and home to a rapidly dwindling number of elephants. An African Parks helicopter piloted by a personal friend of Elephantics was dispatched to rescue the team. Although 6 were rescued, 4 rangers - Anselme Kimbesa Muhindo, Andre Gada Migifuloyo, Djuma Adalu Uweko, and Colonel Jacques Sukamate Lusengo - were shot by poachers and now leave behind their wives and 14 children.
Let's all pitch in to help these families this holiday season. They have suffered a huge loss because of the demand for useless ivory carvings and trinkets so let's help them every way we can. Any and all donations welcome. Donations over $100 will receive an original calendar featuring beautiful photographs of elephants taken by Earl Hirtz Photography in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. Please include your address where you wish your calendar to be mailed. 100% of your donation will be securely wired to Garamba National Park's Ranger Fund, where it will go to support the families, school fees, and basic living allowances for the children of the deceased rangers."
