Cyclone Gaja Emergency Relief Fund - TMAC

Donation protected
An urgent appeal to provide help to people who are affected by Cyclone Gaja.

Gaja, a severe cyclone that hit the coast area of Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Pudukottai districts, Tamilnadu, India on November 15th and 16th, had shattered several traditional fishing villages in the coastal region with high devastating intensity.

At least 40 people were killed in this severe cyclone. As many as 82000 people were evacuated before the cyclone.  The cyclone has uprooted more than 200000 trees (predominantly coconut trees) and has damaged several electric poles and crops in the state. Boats were blown away and fishing industry is totally affected and therefore people’s livelihood is at stake.

Some of the villages that are affected heavily are Mallipattinam, Adiramapattinam, and Mutthupettai. The government relief works are not adequate to these villages as the media coverage is poor. There is a huge shortage of milk, water, kerosene and other basic amenities. No electricity so far and expected to have it restored in not less than 15 days.

Tamilnadu Multicultural Association of Canada (TMAC), a non-profit organization, is appealing to you to help us to provide immediate relief to the people affected in these villages. We have direct reliable contacts in these villages who are providing relief work. All these funds raised will be used to provide milk, candles, and water through the contacts in these villages. Your generous contribution is highly appreciated.
