Gabs' Cancer Fund

Hi, everyone! My name is Gabriela, local calamity and body horror disaster.

On March 11, I went to the hospital for both pelvic and abdominal pains that had been plaguing me for months. During this visit, I found out I had a large ovarian cyst--specifically, a teratoma--that had grown large enough to sit on the right side of my abdominal cavity after a CT scan.

I was immediately referred to an gynecologist who could further help identify what next steps I should take and it was decided I would have a surgery to remove this mass and the accompanying right ovary on April 1.

The pathology unfortunately revealed that this was a malignant teratoma and I was referred to an oncologist on April 16.

Although the pathology was "clean" enough that there was no immediate concern, I was scheduled for a PET scan after my first visit with the oncologist, in order to confirm whether or not I had Ovarian Cancer or if all the cancerous cells were confined to the teratoma.

I had a hard time getting the pre-authorization and referral for my PET scan.

On May 19, 2019, I went to the emergency room after a week with massive bloating, constipation, and a distended abdomen. In this visit, I got another CT scan and it became clear that not only do I have cancer but it is metastasizing.

My distended abdomen is also result of ascites flooding my abdominal cavity, which is both painful, and uncomfortable. It makes my my mobility limited, I can't sleep very well, and I struggle with day-to-day tasks.

I have a number of labs to complete at this time, but I'm slated to begin chemotherapy on May 25.

Why Gofundme?

Cancer treatment can be prohibitely expensive, and my insurance does a good job at covering the costs! The problem is that I often get stuck in a bureaucratic loop, if I don't have have the right referrals or pre-authorizations, and so we'd like to prevent these situations by being to pay up front when it is an absolute emergency.

Other costs include travel, lodgings, since I am getting chemotherapy all the way in Mayagüez from Carolina.

And, lastly, any medication, possible paracentesis (drainage of abdominal fluid),  or procedure that might not be covered by my insurance.

This fund is essentially an emergency nest egg that will 100% go to treatment, medication, travel, and lodgings related to my therapy. It is also a very conservative estimate of what we will need, which might change as I update everyone on my process.

Thank you!!
