Futures for Alyssa and Justin Haun

Barry Haun and Barbara White have experienced a tragedy far beyond the imagination of any of us. On July 4th an errant driver swerved off the road and into a yard where Alyssa Haun, 16, and Justin Haun 13, brother and sister, were walking and put an abrupt end to their bright futures. Both children were brilliant students performing highest in their classes and often competing with each other over whose school district had the best academic advantages. Alyssa and Justin were active in Orchestra from an early age; Alyssa playing violin and Justin, the bass. Cross Country was the sport of choice for the siblings, Alyssa running for Highland and Justin running for Bedford. Alyssa was also very active in the Highland Speech and Debate Team. Justin was aspiring to be a Neurosurgeon and was enrolled in Monroe County Middle College in the fall. Alyssa just texted her mother the other day asking how it felt to be old enough to have two children as Doctors within the next 15 years! Barry and Barbara are grateful beyond measure to have been blessed with such brilliant, warm-hearted children. Their devastation of the loss of those same children is equal.  The communities of Bedford and Highland have come out in droves to support the parents, helping cover the immediate costs and Barry and Barbara want to return the favor. They are setting up a charitable fund that will be available to students of the amazing giving communities of Highland and Bedford to pursue their educational and extra-curricular goals such as sponsoring low-income students’ participation in the Highland High School Speech and Debate Team, as well as donating to research in Neuroscience and Autism.
