Furman Robinson, Jr.

I met Furman Robinson, Jr. (“Furm”) in the fall of 1991. I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was in the lobby of East Wilson Hall at Michigan State University. As it seemed in most dormitories, people were everywhere. In spite of the numerous people, Furm and I instantly connected as if we had been knowing each other for years. Honestly, all we did was laugh! We laughed at everything and everybody. Furm was and still is hilarious! He should be on a comedy tour the way he constantly makes people laugh. His laughter and personality draws people to him. Everywhere we went on campus and until this day, everyone knows Furm. I knew he was a good man because all anyone had to say about him is that he is a cool guy. Like many other friendships formed on college campuses, our friendship grew into a brotherhood. A shared taste in music, religion and lifestyle created a bond that will never be broken.

This bond was formalized in 1998 with the formation of The Impact Group which Furm co-founded along with eight (8) other like-minded individuals. The Impact Group is a band of brothers from different mothers, not all the same but similar in our quest for success. The group was formed to make a difference for families and our communities. The Impact Group’s quest prompted collaborative business ventures, investments in real estate and most importantly a lifetime of friendship and camaraderie.

Our lifetime of friendship and wonderful memories with Furm has led us to this day. In November of 2015, Furm passed out while leaving work. He had been complaining of headaches but thought it was possibly caused by stress and high blood pressure. After a series of tests, it was revealed that Furm had a tumor in his head the size of a golf ball and it needed immediate removal. The tumor was removed and diagnosed as cancer. The type of cancer is called glioblastoma multiforme. The average glioblastoma life expectancy is less than a year, with only 2 percent of people living for longer after diagnosis”.

Since Furm’s diagnosis and two surgeries thereafter, Furm has continued to think and behave like a champion. His belief in G-d, his relationship with family, and his fellowship with his friends have been a healing to his spiritual and physical body. Over 99% of the cancer was removed during the initial surgery and subsequent doctor visits have shown that his body is reacting positively to treatments. We are optimistic about the results of his most recent surgery as well as a potential Polio virus cure.

While Furm continues to fight valiantly and we continue to believe that he will be completely healed, Furm has not been able to return to work since his diagnosis and is now permanently disabled. Medical care can be very costly along with regular daily living expenses. It is with this thought and in the spirit of making an IMPACT that we kindly request a donation to assist Furm as he continues his road to full recovery. Any monies received will be used for:

         - Direct medical expenses
         - Travel expenses to Duke University associated with potential Polio Virus "cure"
         - Expenses associated with Furman's ongoing routine living expenses

Whatever the amount, everything helps - however small or large. Furman still has many dreams and aspirations that he wants to accomplish in the future, and we hope you will join us in helping to make them a reality. We join Furm in thanking you in advance for your help!

Note: The Impact Group, in connection with MSU Black Alumnus Association, will be matching the first $5,000 towards Furman’s cause for all monies received on or before November 10, 2016 which is the date of Furman's first consultation visit to Duke University.
